The training facility is a joint venture between Camâ€" bridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, which consists of a skid strip, a long paved area for driver training. a severalâ€"storey concrete building for practising fire suppression, and a series of other obstacles for the department to train and practise skills. __ Arriving at the facility, the team began preparing for today‘s burn. â€" Old wooden skids, straw, firewood and furniture were piled up in the corner of one of the concrete rooms and set ablaze, sending a thick stream of smoke in the room, limiting visibility to mere inches. Continued from page 3 One of the latest tools being used is an infrared camera just recently purâ€" chased, which shows on an LCD screen the location, intensity and temperature of fires; the camera can detect hotspots through drywall and other solid surâ€" faces, to help firefighters locate danger, and to save time and damage to properâ€" ty when putting out a fire. This turned out to be the day the firefighters are going to test the new piece of equipment in a literal trial by fire at the regional trainâ€" ing complex on the city‘s west side. Stepâ€" ping within a foot of the fire, not an ounce of the heat can be felt. The thermal imaging camera performed as expected in the simulation, detecting and displaying fire through thick smoke and intense heat in the cramped room. The tank is made of lightâ€" weight aluminium, and weighs less than the steel tanks once worn. The new design is as heavy as a child‘s school bag filled with books. Once the tank is on, next comes the airâ€"tight mask, which seals out the smoke, giving the firefighter pure, clean air. Finish off the flashy ensemble with a bright yelâ€" low fire helmet and thick gloves, and they‘re ready to go. The suit completely seals the user off from the outside environment. â€"First, the heavy boots and fire resistant pants, folâ€" lowed by a thick yellow jackâ€" et. Next the oxygen tank, another improvement to the department‘s technology. The team passed the camera around, testing out smoke, fire and heat to give the camera a good test pracâ€" tice, outside the team suited up. The team described some of the newest developâ€" ments in firefighting in recent years. An improvement over water, one of the most comâ€" mon methods to suppress a fire is use of foam. And although the cost of thermal imaging cameras is still about $5,000, down from the $20,000 a few years ago, the department hopes someday each firefighter will have a personal camera to carry into fires, rather than sharing one amongst the team. If spending a career savâ€" ing lives and property, supâ€" pressing fires and respondâ€" ing to medical emergencies sounds like an appealing choice, the cities of Waterâ€" loo, Cambridge, Guelph and its various functions, and pushing its abilities to understand how it will perâ€" form in a real emergency. After dousing the pracâ€" tice fire and packing up the gear, the firefighters, covâ€" ered in sweat and in good spirits, climbed back into the truck for a trip back to the station. According to the men, the foam works more effecâ€" tively, and traps chemical Successful candidates who make it to stage five are offered a probationary posiâ€" tion, with the conditions that they attain a ‘DZ‘ class license, pass the fire departâ€" ments recruit training course, have a police letter of clearance and a medical assessment. Kitchener are currently con ducting joint fire recruit ment for probationary fire fighters. â€"The recruitment process consists of five stages. Applicants need a miniâ€" mum of a Grade 12 educaâ€" tion, English language skills, a valid driver‘s license, first aid and CPR training, and a Firefighter Physical Requireâ€" ments Assessment Certifiâ€" cate. Stage two is an aptitude test. Stage three is a screenâ€" ing process comparing the first two. In stage four, potential firefighters are interviewed by members of the fire department. But keep in mind, it‘s not all glory. Even firefighters scrub toilets.
