Food bank avoids blackout challenge Unlike other areas of Ontario that were without power for in some cases days, most of Waterloo region had its power restored within 12 to 15 hours. The shorter period allowed for the preservaâ€" tion of most perishable food items that were kept in home freezers and refrigerators, and made a mad rush for support from the food bank unnecesâ€" "Our agencies were in to pick up their orders on Monday, and they didn‘t say anything to us," said Fred Lehmann, communiâ€" cations officer for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. But had the power outâ€" age been longer, Lehmann said there could have been great cause for concern. "It was business as usual around here." He said the summer months are traditionally slower in terms of receivâ€" ing food donations. "The summer always presents a challenge for us," he said. "We just don‘t see the number of donations. Peoâ€" ple are away on vacation, businesses shut down, school‘s out. There are a nugber of reasons for it. By Anprea Baicey Chronicle Staff "Yet, the demand is always steady. More food goes out than comes in.". _ _Lehmann assured the food supply is still in reaâ€" sonable shape â€" for now. "Our inventory is a little on the low side," he said. "But it‘s nothing we can‘t handle at this point." But if emergency supâ€" port _ was _ suddenly required, the situation could have left the shelves in the food bank‘s wareâ€" house bare. A successful spring food drive collected over 148,400 lbs. of food. The â€" thought â€" had Lehmann breathing a sigh of relief. It also caused him to stress the importance of the upcoming Thanksgivâ€" ing food drive. â€""I know it‘s still August, but really October isn‘t that far away," he said. Lehmann listed a numâ€" ber of food items needed going into the annual camâ€" paign. Items include peanut butter; macaroni and cheese; pork and beans; canned stews, fruits and vegetables; cold cereal; dry pasta; tomato sauce; and rice. Donations can be dropped off at most groâ€" cery stores. "We‘re hoping people will keep us in mind when they‘re out shopping," Lehmann said. "We‘re fortunate to have a very caring community. We could definitely use their support now." Kitchener Blessed Sacrament Blessed Katert Canadian Martyrs John Sweeney Monsignor Gleason Monsignor Haller Notre Dame .. .. .
