F‘[\he Waterloo County Quilters Guild has made a special donaâ€" tion to the Waterloo public library and children in the region. Over the past year, members of the Quilters Guild have been working on a quilt based on a chilâ€" drens book, ‘Selina and the Bear Paw Quilt, by Barbara Smucker. Quilters partner with library to support children‘s literacy The book is based on a true story about a Mennonâ€" ite family and the flight from religious persecution to Upper Canada during the American Civil War. The book is also richly illustrated with authentic quilt patterns, including the bear paw quilt that is at the centre of the story, which carries memories for the fleeing family. After months of work by quilters from local commuâ€" nities, the Waterloo County Quilters Guild has now completed work on the bear paw quilt and is donating the finished work to the Waterloo public library. The quilt is now on disâ€" play at the library and will be loaned by WPL, along with Smucker‘s book, to Be in over 29,000 homes every week of the year. Advertise in the Waterloo Chronicle â€" 886â€"2830 daycares, schools, local public libraries and other child care organizations in Waterloo Region. The bear paw quilt will be used durâ€" ing storytimes and reading circles to bring the book to life. "It‘s a wonderful way to support children‘s literacy," says WPL chief librarian Cathy Matyas. "Quilting has such a meaningful place in the culture of Waterloo Region, so this celebration of textile arts and literature is very special." The quilt project was spearheaded by local quilâ€" ter and library supporter Marney Heatley, who read about a similar project done by the Quilt Guild of Metro Detroit in Royal Oaks, Mich. Heatley worked with the Waterloo County Quilter‘s Guild to identify an approâ€" priate children‘s book and then confirmed the design of the quilt and the distriâ€" bution of work. "The project in Michi gan was a rousing suc cesss," says Heatley. "The quilters in Michiâ€" gan have completed 94 quilts, based on children‘s TA books. It would be great if the Waterloo Region project could grow to that extent, and bring quilts and books together for children." According to Heatley, the quilters.guild will be working on a second quilt for WPL, to be ready in the spring of 2004. Working with library staff, guild members have decided to create a quilt based on Tony Johnston‘s book "The Quilt Story". The book shows how a quilt provides warmth, fun and comfort to two generaâ€" tions of a family. ‘The finished quilt based on Smucker‘s book is on display in the atrium at the main library on Albert Street, and later in the year will also be showcased at the McCormick branch on Parkside Drive.
