"Public health will continâ€" ue with the monitoring and abaternent steps that are curâ€" rently in place to address water on public properties, but residents can play a major role in reducing the risk on their own properties. A reduction of standing water now can have a significant reduction on the number of mosquitoes later in the seaâ€" son," says Dr. Liana Nolan, medical officer of health for the Region of Waterloo. Nolan added that while the risk of infection is still considered to be small, some people can develop serious, or life threatâ€" ening illness from the virus. With the recent rains, and the time of season, more mosquitoes will start searchâ€" ing for sites to lay eggs. Hatched larvae have strated to become biting mosquitoes, and with the new generation of certain bird species, it proâ€" duces a major start to the amplification of West Nile While some potential mosquito breeding grounds are fairly obvious, others are less so. Residents are urged to * Lawn and garden supâ€" plies: partially empty bags of mulch or soil exposed to rain may have small pockets that hold enough water to provide a breeding site. Planter pots with attached saucers and large planters that hold Waterloo Region residents are being asked to carefully inspect their property for sources of standing water that may support larval mosâ€" quitoes. Residents urged to remove sources of stagnant water smaller plant pots, are also potential breeding grounds. * Lawn and garden equipâ€" ment: wheel barrows, lawn mowers, stored swimming pools and plastic garden tools and toys should also be inspected for standing water. Often people focus on areas off their property as the source for mosquito probâ€" lems, or look at obvious or large sources of standing water. However, residents need to look at their own property for all sources of stagnant water. Remember, 50 to 100 millilitres of water can produce up to 100 mosâ€" quitoes and larger sources can produce thousands of mosquitoes.
