E. coli 0157 is a strain of common intestinal bacteria that produces a potent toxin. The toxin can cause serious illness in anyone, but particularly children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms of E. coli 0157 infection include stomach cramps, vomniting and diarâ€" rhea that may become bloody. Severe disease can lead to kidney damage and in some cases, death. Iliness occurs within two to 10 days of consuming contaminatâ€" ed food or drink. Apple cider can become contaminated with E. coli if apples are allowed to come in contact with fecal materiâ€" al. This could occur at a farm if apples are picked from the ground where liveâ€" stock have been allowed to roam. A small amount of feces on a few apples is thought to be enough to contaminate a whole batch of cider. As well, subsequent batches produced from the same press could become contaminated if the press is not â€" sanitized â€" between batches. The majority of juice sold in Canada is pasteurized. This includes all bottled, canned, boxed or concenâ€" trated juices displayed on supermarket shelves. Juice or cider sold in refrigerated displays or in produce sections of the groâ€" cery store, at roadside stands or farm markets or fairs may not have been pasteurized. _ Consumers should check the label or ask a retailer to be sure. _ For more information about cider or to obtain a copy of the CFIA Code, conâ€" tact the community health department at 883â€"2008. Historic and modern apple breeds will be feaâ€" tured and participants will sample a wide variety of flavour and apple treats. Learn how to store and serve apples, and explore their history. Doon Heritage Crossroads holds an evening of apple tasting Visit Doon â€" Heritage Crossroads Sept. 20 from 7 p.m.â€"9 p.m. for an evening of apple tasting. The cost is $8 per person for the apple tasting workâ€" shop, including all material. Participants must preâ€"regisâ€" ter by calling 748â€"1914.
