Dorothy Sandlerâ€"Glick opens new KWCMS season with a fine romantic evening n the world of live music, Ia promised "sure thing" isn‘t always. Even with the bestâ€"laid promotional plans, Murphy‘s Law reigns here too, and it struck the Kâ€"W Chamber Music Society‘s opening attraction for the 2001â€"2002 season when the originally schedâ€" uled artist suddenly had to cancel. But when the unexpected happens, the KWCMS can also be relied on for splendid replacements â€" firstâ€"rate performers captured on the fly with readyâ€"toâ€"run proâ€" And that‘s what hapâ€" pened on Saturday, when pianist Dorothy Sandlerâ€" Glick graced the Music Room with a rich and varied repertoire that had nothing of the lastâ€"minute about it. The Torontoâ€"based musiâ€" cian opened with Mozart‘s substantial threeâ€"movement Sonata in F (K.332). Less of the brilliant and brittle musicâ€"box feeling and more of the deeply lyrical and thythmic essence made this very much a "desert island" piece. It would take a lot of listening to even begin growing tired of it, especially in the beautifully nuanced way Sandlerâ€"Glick treated its fluid lines, cadences and chordal movement. When she moved on to a set of three Brahms Intermezzi (Op.117), the atmosphere _ rose from refined to sublime. The KWCMS Steinway respondâ€" ed with an almost eager resâ€" onance to these powerfully poetic, â€" deeply â€" textured pieces; they seemed an ideal acoustic "fit" for this particâ€" ular combination of instruâ€" ment and performer. With balanced intensity, clarity and pacing, Sandlerâ€"Glick highlighted the wealth of contrast that gives these crowning Brahms works their perennial appeal. Breaking briefly with the romantic theme just before intermission, a set of four untitled _ preludes _ by Canadian composer Srul Irving Glick unfolded as a delightful contrast in mood and style. While one gently With balanced intensity, clarity and pacing, Sandlerâ€"Glick highlighted the wealth of contrast that gives these crowning Brahms works their perennial appeal. By Paviine FincH For The Chronicle Torontoâ€"based pianist dissonant excerpt tasted slightly of a Satie "gymnopeâ€" die" and another recalled blue shades of Gershwin, the fleeting similarities were anything but imitation. Especially enjoyable was a jazzy offbeat finale, full of piquant motifs and exuberâ€" ant celebration. A predominantly romanâ€" tic evening would be inâ€" complete without some Schumann, and Sandlerâ€" Glick couldn‘t have chosen a better sendâ€"off than his draâ€" matic â€" and _ challenging Kreisleriana (Op.16). These eight fantasies â€" inspired by the adventures of novelist Dorothy Sandlerâ€"Glick E.T.A. With _ titles such â€" as Aurschwung (Soaring), In Der Nacht (In the Night), or Traumes Wirren (Dream Confusion}, one‘s imaginaâ€" tion can flow with the grand and poignant gestures of this inspired literaryâ€"musiâ€" cal marriage. Sandlerâ€"Glick maintained _ a â€" focused and persuasive presence throughout, playing to the "big picture" that propels each vignette into some very challenging technical terâ€" After a program lasting barely 75 minutes, Sandlerâ€" Glick was in no danger of wearing out her welcome. A return visit is a must, espeâ€" cially if she can be persuadâ€" ed to play a little more Brahms.
