"Our class enters a lot of contests but this is the one I wanted to win the most. I never dreamed I would win the trip to Belgium," Grant said. Grant‘s design involved people dressed up in clown noses and a playâ€"onâ€"words with the word "circus." Her work, along with 24 others, was chosen as the best from all entries. As the Platinum winner, Kathy Grant receives an Agfa ePhoto CL 34 digital camera and an allâ€"inclusive trip to Belgium _ this _ month. Activities will include educaâ€" tional workshops, shopping and sightseeing. Creativity and originality were assets in becoming the 2001 Platinum and Gold winners. The year 2001 marks the fourth year for this internaâ€" tional graphic design conâ€" test for students, with 3,000 entries from 28 countries. Every year the Agfa Young Creatives Contest has a new theme, and this year‘s was entitled "A Day At The Circus." To enter, students aged 17 to 30 were required to portray visually through photography or illustration their insight into the colourâ€" ful world of the circus. The purpose of the circusâ€"theme contest was for the artists to create a poster, which could be used by a circus as an enticing piece of advertising for adults and/or children. Previous year‘s contest themes include "City in a Postcard" and "Visions of Contrast." The Platinumâ€"prize winâ€" ners represent the top designs from among all the entries, and the Goldâ€"prize winners represent the best design in each country. Grant, a student in the graphic design program at Conestoga College, was selected by an international jury of design experts. athy Grant of Waterloo B is not your average young artists. The contest challenges young artists to address design, illustration and photograâ€" phy in relationship to print production. It‘s a great way for students to win great prizes and, potentially, to have their works showcased in a global forum. The contest ran from October 2000 _ through February 2001, and the porâ€" trayal of the circus was entirely up to the artist. Entrants were given leeway to depict a classical, modern or outâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"ordinary kind of circus. For instance, entries were encouraged to range _ from _ wildâ€"west posters and avantâ€"garde concepts, to children‘s circus and underâ€"water circus posters. ning works are exhibited at http://www.agfa.com, and a selection of these works will be used for Agfa‘s pretigious, international VIP 2002 calâ€" endar.
