In order to qualify for a grant, school boards must determine which schools are most valuable, and which can be considered surplus. Students who now attend the two schools will be rediâ€" rected to other facilities such as Elizabeth Ziegler, Lincoln Heights, Keatsway, . and Preuter. "Unfortunately _ there aren‘t _ enough _ students in the core to keep these schools viable," said Kitchener _ trustee _ Ted Martin. His words were met with opposition from Waterloo trustee Kathryn Craig, who said there is no need to close one of the schools, let alone both of them. "We don‘t have a capacity problem," she said before opposing the motion. "The numbers don‘t require us to close these core schools. "Waterloo _ has _ more pupils sitting in portables and portâ€"aâ€"pacs, and who are bused in than Kitchener and Cambridge combined. "It‘s just too tight. You can‘t just move students around without affecting other schools as well." Her comments . were echoed by Waterloo trustee Kathleen Woodcock, who agreed the board should look at every possible option before deciding to close either school. "We need to try everyâ€" thing and look at everything before we make this deciâ€" sion," she said. The sentiments, however, seemed to fall on deaf ears, as the decision was finalized with the provision to delay the disposition process of the school sites until April 30 to allow the City of Waterloo time and opportunity to propose alternate use for the properties. ... "It‘s not a good one, and it‘s not an easy one; but it makes sense." Hendry also said the city‘s support of keeping the schools open was too little too late. "During _ two _ prior reviews of Brighton public school, we told the city that we were concerned over the viability of Brighton because of the sprawl which was takâ€" ing place up Regina Street," he said. "Since 1997, 900 units have been built in the core, and only two students have come out of those units. Instead of putting social housing in the core, which would have brought more students, the city decided to put that responsibility on Kitchener and Cambridge. And 1 don‘t believe it‘s the responsibility of this board to put students in the core. "'They simply missed the mark." "The decision had to be made. It‘s not a good one, and it‘s not an easy one; but it makes sense." John Hendry Waterloo trustee
