istoric Joseph HSchneidcr Haus Museum and Gallery opens for the season Feb. 17 with the launch ofan exhibi- tion entitled Working Toward the Light, which highlights the work of the museum's folk artist-in-resi, dence for 2001, wood engraver Wesley W. Bates. Bates grew up in western Canada but worked for most of his professional career as a printmaker in Hamilton. Now. from his studio in Clifford. Bates produces illustrations for private presses in England and the us, but has also received commissions from main- stream presses in Canada. Most recently he executed engravings for Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe Stories published by Penguin Books, and he illustrated Timothy Findley's From Stone Orchard published by Harper Collins Ltd. in 1998. Bates' exhibit Working Toward the Light includes many of his original engrav- ings for these publications, but also showcases the tradi, tional tools and techniques of his trade. Saturday. Bates will give introductory rem- arks to launch his year in residence beginning at 2 pm. and will demonstrate his art over the course of the afternoon. In subsequent weeks and months. he will conduct several workshops and will be on hand regular hi to demonstrate his per- sonal approach to wood engraving. I? Launch of folk artist residency for 2001 highlights heritage week activities at Joseph Schneider Haus A women's history sym- posium marks the museum's Heritage Day events on Feb. 19. Inspired by the recent University Women's Club publication The Women of Waterloo, staff have arranged a variety of guest speakers to share their knowledge of local women's history themes with the public and with students in Grades 5 through 8. Heritage Week events conclude on Thursday evening at 7:30 pm. with the annual Fellow's Lecture. Dr. Geoff Hayes from the Department of History, University of Waterloo, will present "Fixing Waterloo Region _ A Look Backwards".
