Bates. Bates grew up in western Canada but worked for most of his professional career as a printmaker in Hamilton. Now. from his studio in Clifford. Bates produces illustrations for private presses in England and the us, but has also received commissions from main- stream presses in Canada. Most recently he executed engravings for Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe Stories published by Penguin Books, and he illustrated Timothy Findley's From Stone Orchard published by Harper Collins Ltd. in 1998.
