Oberlander‘s daughter continues campaign for public support The daughter of Waterloo resident Helmut Oberlander, who could face deportation over the next few months, has put more of a local slant on her national plea for public supâ€" port. Irene Rooney, who launched a petition earlier this month asking members of the public to sign their names in request that the Canadian government allow her 76â€"yearâ€"old father to remain in Canada, has now made the petition available to Waterloo Chronicle readers. "The petition is a way of dealing with it," Rooney sad "It gives us something positive to deal with, other than with something that is not justice." Oberlander faces a loss of citâ€" izenship, which could result in deportation, alter the federal court ruled last month that the thenâ€"17â€"yearâ€"old withheld information of his involvement as an interpreter with a Gerâ€" man "killing unit" in the Secâ€" ond World War when he applied to come to Canada. The court found, however, that there was no evidence Oberlander committed any war crimes. Thieves target elderly shoppers Since Jan. 29 there have been 13 distraction thefts occurring throughout the Region of Waterloo. Waterloo regional police service Division 3 detectives are now wortking with the Toronto police service fallowâ€" ing the arrest of three suspects in the retail grocery store thefts. The victims were lone elderly females who were pushing shopping carts with their purses in the carts. The {emale shopper is distracted by one of the suspects who speaks broken English and asks for help. wWith the victims back turned from her purse, the second suspect steals the walâ€" let, money or credit cards, leaving the purse in the cart The suspects then leave the store immediately and the vicâ€" tim doesn‘t realize she is missâ€" ing valuables until hitting the checkout area. Police are asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspects and are warning shoppers to keep an eye on their valuables.
