Waterloo cobbler calls it a day At age 93, John Gross has decided it‘s finally time to retire After 67 years in business in uptown Waterloo, the shoe repairman plans to close his 22 Dominion Lane shoeâ€"repair shop, just north of the Waterâ€" loo regional police station on Erb Street West, Oct. 1. Thursâ€" day will be the last day John Gross & Son Shoe Repair will be in business. "L can‘t see," Gross said, when asked what the main reaâ€" son was behind his ‘sudden‘ decision to retire. "I can‘t work anymore. But I‘ve been at it long enough. It‘s time to retire anyway. Tim Gardner Chronicle Staff was like making a masterpiece It was something that nobody else could do." As for keeping busy during hus retirement, Gross said that shouldn‘t be a problem. He has a big yard at home and he enjoys gardening and flowers. And he won‘t be completely giving up the shoeâ€"repair busiâ€" ness. He will be working in his garage one day a week making tapâ€"dance shoes for The Dressâ€" ing Room on Erb Street East. He said the owner of The Dressing Room wanted him to do the work because she didn‘t know where else it could be done.
