:‘Weber Street reconstruction to begin in spring North at uts last meetng last Wednesday (June 23) The region wants to build a twoâ€" way, leftâ€"hand turn lane (a fitth lane}) in the centre of Weber Street North all the way from Marshall Street to Columbia Street by 2001 Work on phase two of the project, from Marshall Street to University Avenue, will likely begin in the spring of 2001. Regional officials want to build the twoâ€"way leftâ€"hand turn lane to cut down on midâ€" block collisions on Weber Street North. Van De Keere tald Waterloo council in a presentaâ€" tion this past March that there were 17 accidents on Weber Street North between Lodge Street and University Avenue in 1997, making it the secondâ€" worst section of road in the entire region for midâ€"block colâ€" lisions In a later interview, van De Keere said according to 1998 data collected by regional offiâ€" cials, Weber Street North between University Avenue and Columbia Street is now ranked more dangerous in terms of midâ€"block collisions than the section of road between Marshall Street and University Avenue. The entire project is expected to cost the region approximately $1.26 million Waterloo student wins law firm scholarship A Waterloo high school stuâ€" dent is one of 100 students from across Ontario to win a $1,000 scholarship from The Miller Thomson Foundation. QOrth, CMO, CMO UNIVERSITY AVENUE *\ INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS *) _ AT LINCOLN ROAD AND £ DALE CRESCENT CiTY OF WATERLOO REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF WATERLOO Regionat Clerk and the City of Waterloo about $800,000 The city‘s costs are largely for a watermain replacement and some sanitary sewer rehabilitaâ€" tion work However van De Keere said the project could cost a fair bit more once the region factors in the cost of relocatung a number of hydro poles and services along Weber Street North. The region hasn‘t updated those costs yet, he said. He also said the utility reloâ€" cations is one of the reasons the region is holding off the construction proposed for the street between University Avenue and Columbia Street "We recognize that showing the intelligence and drive to achieve high marks in school is important," said the chairman of the Miller Thomson law firm, Judson Whiteside, in the news release. "But for young people to succeed in today‘s world, they need to be wellâ€" rounded. Thats why academic marks are only part of the criâ€" teria we look for in awarding scholarships. We know that social and work skills are important too, so we look for students who exhibit outstandâ€" ing qualities in terms of service fall unul this spring instead of this "With uttdines, theres always a uming factor when it comes to construction," van De Keere said. "They need lead time t design and relocate their plant And things were getring a hiutle bit tight to get things underw ay for this fall." However van De Keere sad the relocation of hydro pules and utility services could sutl possibly go ahead this fall, with the construction to follow in the spring. The uuhty relocaâ€" tron could take up to two months with the actual conâ€" struction lasting three munths, he said. to their communitres, referâ€" ences from teachers and comâ€" munity _ leaders, extraâ€" curricular involvement and accomplishment in partâ€"time work."
