There‘s a new business on the block trying to make a name for itself. Coâ€"owners Margaret McKillop and lonescu Mariana, of Ooh, La, La Hair Studio for Men and Women, 203 King St. S in Waterloo, had no sooner opened their doors for busiâ€" ness last Monday when they came up with a great idea on how to put some of their earnings back into the community. The cause they‘ve selected to conâ€" tribute to is St, Mary‘s Hospital new Intensive Care/Coronary Care Unit, which was recently approved for construction by the Ministry of Health. And the pair are prepared to donate to the project all sales proâ€" ceeds every third Wednesday startâ€" ing Dec. 20 for the next six months. More than $3 million is needed to complete the project that will make the unit one of the most modern in the province. "We‘ve heard of the hospital ‘s B® °*4 â€" other and became business partners project and the provincial cutbacks, e i. k 4 * quite accidentally. Each had heard so we felt that this was a worthy lt that the 203 King St. location was cause," said McKillop. "Hospitals s available for rent, and each called are going through tough enough the buildings owner, who, in turn, times and they don‘t need any more put the pair in touch with one cutbacks. I speak of the consumption, investment, government and net export sectors. The year 1995 has been one of increasing employment BUT considerable consumer reluctance. The single largest stimulus to the economy has been the trade sector, which depends on the thriving economies of other countries to continue. This time of year, we can evaluate retail sales E and observe what is happening around Christâ€" mas and 1 often find that to be a rough guide as to the future year. It is also instructive to remember that the stock market has given sigâ€" nals this fall of some confidence too as the Dow and other indices have reached record levels. BUSINESS Recently, my wife observed in doing some catalogue shopâ€" ping, that an inordinate number of items were out of stock. That can only mean that there were good sales on these items. Peter Cudhea Chronicle Staff Looking ahead at 1996 IT FIGURES Interestingly, these catalogues were U.S. based as she wanted some items delivered directly to U.S. addresses. As I indicated above, Canadian exports depend on the health of the U.S economy because of the high reliance on our sales to that country and it would appear that the U.S. econâ€" | omy is healthy at the consumption level. m 1 am not observing any resurgence in confiâ€" dence approaching the 1986 to 1989 period However, 1 do observe a total lack of confidence either. Thus, the likely outcome is slow growth in consumer sales and investment. Lower interest rates will stimulate both, yet drasâ€" tic cuts in interest rates would stimulate a great deal more (Continued on page 14 Interest rates affect the housing and automoâ€" bile industries greatly. It is likely that interest rates will be reduced so long as the Quebec issue moves off the front burner in world news. How likely is it that Bouchard will let it die for 1996? 1 suspect he will want to keep it on the front burner in which case the chances of interâ€" est rates falling in real terms to levels approachâ€" ing the 1970s is highly unlikely (in 1975, real interest rates were zero). It is unlikely that we will see a drop of more than 100 to 200 basis points although business is slow, they‘re hoping that the community will respond to the worthy cause. They have heard of projects like this getâ€" ting great response in the Toronto area and hope that this community will respond similarly. "We want to contribute to our community. The care of cardiac patients and the criticallyâ€"ill is cruâ€" cial," McKillop said. "A salon visit is a real pickâ€"meâ€"up and this will make it even better. Our customers will know they‘ve helped out, too." The salon, which includes a gift and clothing boutique, will also donate $5 from every Guatemalanâ€" made sweater, to the project "Generosity like this is a real boost to our fundraising efforts," said St. Mary‘s Hospital president Bruce Antonello. "We appreciate community support for this imporâ€" tant project." Each -year the ICU/CCU cares for more than 1,000 of the Region‘s most critically ill.
