Just over 20 years ago that Japanese cars were considered to be junk; made from rusted out American cars recycled with inferior engineering. But tkey were cheap and economiâ€" cal, filling a need for many Americans seeking basic transâ€" portation. With gas prices gparing more and more buyers indicated that economy was their major concern in the buyâ€" ing decision. The big three North American producers responded to the new buyer preferences but due to the long lead time required to bring a new model to the showroom, they conceded round one of the fight to the Japanese. The subcompact market that Honda, Toyota, Datsun and Mazda were concentrating on tended to be less profitable so the Amenicans made room in this segment with little concern for the industry as a whole. For the second time in 50 years, the Amencans had underestimated the determination and the strength of the Japanese. By the early ‘80s the Japanese were competitive in all market segments and had succeeded in bringing the most powerful corporations in the world to It is truly one of the most amazing marketing success stoâ€" nes this century PAGE 46 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1994 By Mike Williams A beautiful Legend that‘s aged gracefully VOLVO REGULAR. AVAILABLE IN TWO SIZES: But it was Honda‘s dramatic entry into the highly profâ€" itable upscale markets that was executed with text book preâ€" cision. To further segment their product line, Honda created the Acura marque with an entirely new dealer network. Wearing the Acura nameplate, the Legend took on all comâ€" ers. But this time it was not only the Americans who were clobbered. The Acura Legend had the supreme likes of BMW and Mercedes scrambling back to the drawing board. As good as the first generation Legend was, the second generation, first introduced in 1991, is one of the most beauâ€" tiful cars made anywhere! Now in it‘s fifth model year, the Legend is by no means the most modern, nor the most sporty, nor the finest example of automotive engineering. But it is a very attractive, very sexy and very well engiâ€" neered car. At this point the plans are to replace the Legend in the next few years. The competition is fierce and changes are required â€" not to keep up to the pack but to stay ahead of it! The Legend Sedan I tested was the upscale LS model. A long wheel base and a wide track give the Legend Sedan a very stately appearance. Like all Honda products, form and function are beautifully blended. Make no mistake about it, from the economical Civic to the aweâ€" some Acura NSX, Hondas are near the top of my list in every category. The Legend is no exception. It‘s just plain gorgeous to look at and a pleasure to drive. The fit and finish of the exterior and interior is near to perfection. Entering the cabin one immediately senses a very high level of quality. The feel of the doors as they open and close is precise. The dashboard is a little dated but maintains Honda‘s ergonomic simplicity and efficiency. The leather wrapped steering wheel lifts and telescopiclly adjusts itself to the driver‘s preferred position when the igniâ€" tion key is engaged. Upon removing the key, the steering wheel moves out of the way to ease the effort involved in entering and exiting the car. Honda has carefully engineered the ride using a fourâ€" wheel independent double wishbone suspension. Bumps are nicely smoothed out but with enough feedback from the road to provide the driver with the confidence to push the car Experience Trooper Lease 1994 1sSUZU TROOPER LS Practically/Amazing 1995 ACURA LEGEND SEDAN THE 1995 VOLYO 850 SPORTSWAGON: 450 Belmont Ave. W., Kit 744â€"5811 ONLY 2 REMAIN â€"KIT C H E NE R EXTRA LARGE. extra VOLVO (Continued on page 47)
