Ms. Forwell was asked the other day "But what have you actually accomplished as a member of Waterloo City Council and Waterloo Regional Council since 19882 What issues have you defended?" Forwell quickly responded "My list of achievements and issues which I have worked on diligently for years is a long one. However, I would like to highlight just a few," Forwell went on to say that she is the only mayoralty candidate who voted for the preservation of the West Side Class One Wetland Complex as defined by the Ministry of Natural Resources. She believes strongly in the environment and has displayed this commitment by developing policies on pesticide use and ground water protection and singleâ€" handedly organized Waterloo‘s first Environment Week celebration. In addition Forwell established the "Waterloo Green Fund" to help preserve more of our green space without impacting taxes. Forwell was also instrumental in bringing the Waterloo Green Home Project to reality, which has placed Waterloo on the map, once again, for its environmental commitment, knowledge and expertise. She also chairs the Region‘s Water Efficiency Committee which has successfully delayed the need for costly new supplies and decreased water usage in the Region. However, environmental achievements are not the only accomplishments Forwell has negotiated. She worked tirelessly with Regional Staff and the community to ease traffic congestion problems on the West Side by creating intersection improvements on Fischerâ€"Hallman. In the area of business development Forwell initiated discussions on a policy to help existing industries by waving development charges for those wishing to expand in these tough economic times. She also urged Council to work towards making Waterloo‘s development charges more competitive with surrounding municipalities to encourage new business growth in Waterloo. Emergency services are also a concern of Forwell‘s and she worked with the local Fire Departments to provide "Automatic Aid" between the Twin Cities. She also worked with the local Fire Departments to pursue the idea of building a joint training facility. Forwell has also set her sights on recreational and community needs. She helped to define the community‘s recreational needs for Waterloo‘s proposed new Sports Park for the East Side, and, served on a committee to ensure Waterloo Arena was available for community use for as long as possible. In the area of community planning, Forwell worked with Lutherwood‘s Board to help locate their Senior‘s Village in the city‘s core. In her closing comments about her accomplishments Forwell stated "We need a mayor who is not afraid to take a stand on issues, make their thoughts known and who will be a leader for this rommuninm: * Susan Forwell‘s Proven Record is rimege Ne CitY s core. sing comments about her accomplishments tated "We need a mayor who is not afraid to take n issues, make their thoughts known and who leader for this community."
