PAGE 4 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 1994 I knew we‘d get around to it sooner or later. "I was over at Stack A Shelf this morning and bought a shelf for our stereo speaker," said Beth casually the other day. "Terrific," I said, "I always felt the sound was muffled behind the couch. We should see a real difference." "Oh, and I‘m also looking at..." "Let me guess, closet organizers for our room." "How did you guess, Rick?" "Let‘s just say I knew it was only a matter of time." "We‘re guaranteed three extra feet." "Three extra feet of closet space with this new system we drew up. Think of the added flexibility." "You don‘t have to sell me, I like closet systems, don‘t you rememâ€" ber, I did Chad‘s room." "But, uh, you seem to struggle with the idea of them at the beginâ€" ning. You did a great job, though, once you got the handle of back to front and rightâ€"side up." "C‘mon, it wasn‘t that tough." "I told them at Stack A Shelf who I was married to, and they said ‘oh yeh, Rick, seems to struggle with them at the beginning if we recall his columns‘." "Well, they have that right. I am a struggling columnist." "We‘ll pick up the stuff Saturday," planned Beth, "and before you know it, we‘ll have enough closet space to do a waltz." "I certainly hope our aims are loftier than that." Whatever, off we went Saturday and picked up a bunch of shelves and associated hardware. "Ever done this stuff before?" asked Big D. at the loading dock. Sensing he, uh, knew my background, I confidently replied: "Sure have, yup, no problems." "Great, then you know when to use these big guys as opposed to the small guys which won‘t fit over your bigger wiring." "Yessirree, no problem, did my son‘s room oh, about a year ago, a breeze, be up before you know it." _ ~Got it all home and â€" yikes, 423 gizmos, screws, caps, anchor plugs. Well, maybe 42.3. Undeterred, I went about my business of sorting what was with what. _ _ _ __ _ "Hey, neat, I‘ll be able to put my sweaters on the shelf and my shoes down the side, with a little room left over for..." "Well, no, I had planned for my hat boxes to go above your hanger shelf, and Rick, look at all the sweaters I have, they would be going down the side." _ "Yours is the easy side," declared Beth. You have the one closetâ€" long shelf and four side shelves." "On my side?" "Yes. Now look, you can downsize a little, this football jersey has outgrown its perceived romanticism, and your sloâ€"pitch outfit still has those grass stains from 10 years ago, and your housecoat that you never did like, and this golf shirt you haven‘t worn in four years and, now give me a break, even if this sportscoat style came back, it would never fit you. There, you‘re all set. Your sweaters, I‘ll rearrange in your chest of drawers." "Hey neat, looks a lot more open," I said upon completion. "Now, what about your side, what are you going to throw away"" "Well, that‘s more of a grey area," Beth said. "Not only am I keepâ€" I‘ll be able to consolidate my summer and winter clothing all along my side." "Is, uh, that where our three extra feet are coming from*" "If you build it right." mwunmmm&nitmuymnlrm, andbeforeym knew it, Beth was fast and furiously reâ€"loading. Since I wouldn‘t remember the history of even one of her fashions, I declined to comâ€" ment on their respective, and respectful, necessity. "Rick, you did a beautiful job, I got all my stuff in and the hat boxes fit up top like a glove, and, oh, I put all your pants in the cubiâ€" cle up there, and well, a couple of my sweaters down the side. My side was tougher, but I managed to squeeze it all in." I opened the closet, peered in, admitted that hey, yes, I did a good job, and maybe, somewhere, for someone, we did create an extra three feet of space. Great things, these closet systems. So much room, yes, there was enough space to do a waltz. "Some other time," concluded Beth. Oh well. By the way, the stereo sounds much better, thank you Housecoat simply wasn‘t in the plan Waterioo Chronicle Canadian Publications Mail Sales Product Agreement #136379 Published every Wednesday by The Fairway Group 215 Fairway Rd. 8., Kitchener, Ont.
