The Funky Headhunter Giant/Wamer After selling breakfast cereal and popcorn chicken, it‘s pretty hard to sell an uzi with any real conviction. Hammer, on the comeback trail after some personal and financial setbacks, deals a blow to his already shaky credibility by ‘aking the gangsta rap route. Problem is, rap‘s hardcore side has too many charlatans as it is so the addition of Hammer as The occasion was for the soundtrack to the just released Backbeat, a movie about Hamburgâ€" era Beatles. it works wonderfully, too, because Dulli does a great John, Moore and Fleming play some supercharged guitar and the material leans heavily toward the Long Talil Saily/Money period, when a more raucous Beaties borrowed from great American artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Backbeat captures the raw spirit of the early Beatlies and as tributes go, it sure beats the 3roadway version of Beatlemania. When the Clash sammed Beatiemania in their anthemic London Calling, they were more or less saying the whole Fab Four thing was nothing but a sham. it grew into something of a fashionable punk battle cry as hypocritical punks denounced the old guard while listening to Begâ€" gar‘s Banquet in the privacy of their homes. Postâ€"punk artists have tended to be more at peace with their rock and roll forebears. How can they not be when Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs), Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Don Fleming (Gumbai!l), Mike Mills (R.E.M.) and Dave Grohi (Nirvana) get together to pretend they‘re the Beaties. @& WE‘RE SORRY... Clocking in at a sometimes agonizing 65 minâ€" utes, The Downward Spiral is many things â€" brilâ€" liant, pretentious, manic, fascinating, terrifying â€" but never less than compelling. For mature listeriâ€" ing audiences only. Whatever the reason, The Downward Spiral is one unnerving, uncompromising spnic bloodâ€" bath. It‘s all about the rage and desperation and alienation of an apparently tortured soul who exorcises his demons in brutally antiâ€"comâ€" mercial bursts of chainsaw electronics and gulâ€" tars. Ross MacDonald is a Cambridge freelance writer & It‘s hard to say what drives Trent Reznor. A misâ€" erable childhood perhaps. Or maybe he‘s just seen too many Steven Seaga! movies. an ambassador doesn‘t do anything for either party‘s cause.
