I give the Lexus the edge, however, with its cleaner, more lithe profile. Typical of Lexus is the excepâ€" The Oxford Dictionary defines the word "enigma" as "puzâ€" zling thing, riddle or paradox". After experiencing the Lexus ES 300, I found myself using the word enigma quite often in attempts to describe this car. On the one hand, it is well deserving of the Lexus badge with its luxurious appointments and graceful appearance. On the other hand, it makes a courageous attempt at being a sports sedan. No wonder this car has been puzzling auto writers since it was first introduced for the 1992 model year. Visually, the ES 300 follows in the footsteps of its big brother, the LS 400. Styling is clean and graceful but doesn‘t really grab your attention like a BMW would. That said, I was more than happy to receive the appreciative glances from drivers on the road. Whether all these people recognize a Lexus or just plain enjoy the view, I‘m not sure, but the ES 300 sure rates a high "stare per dollar" ratio. o By Gary Highfield Testing the enigmatic Lexus ES 300 "A great to own a inaghiconizcg uiss ocm ts m On Gemeriitcies uy DON‘T MISS THE SPECIAL SUMMER SAVINGS AT 1993 Lexus ES 300 tional fit and finish of the exterior. No one has been able to match Lexus in this aspect since it first arrived on the scene. There‘s no other way to put it, interior space is immense. We‘re talking limoâ€"like room in here. Regular readers of this space will know that a key consideration for yours truly, is head and elbow room, and the ES 300 has got it. Rear seat The interior design is much more attractive that the exteâ€" rior view would suggest. Controls are on the top of my high marks list, Legible and extremely easy to operate at a glance, the controls for ventilation, stereo, lights and wipers are all within easy reach and make the ES 300 a driver‘s dream come true. You can‘t help but be impressed by the luxury that cozes out of the materials Lexus has selected. The light beige leather on my test car was some of the finest I have experienced and made the sixâ€"way power seats a welâ€" come comfort on long trips. California walnut trim graces the dash in an elegant manner that so many other manufacâ€" turers fail to accomplish in their attempts. Interior noise in nonâ€"existent in any driving conditions, more high marks in passengers are limited to about six feet but there‘s still plenty of room for three abreast. s There is only a limited time left for big savings on the cars that are big in engineering safety from the ground up: the ‘93 Volvos. Ride is also luxumous and while the ES 300 does better than expected for a luxury sedan, it does bottom out on hard dips and has a fair amount of understeer. Under spirited driving, those incredibly comâ€" fortable seats fall a bit short of providing enough lateral supâ€" port. Braking is superb and provides excellent feedback. Let‘s remember, the ES 300 is primarily a touring car Some writers have tried to make it into a full blown sports sedan and have pitted it against the likes of BMW 325s and Taurus SHOs. This is hardly fair. Lexus only offhandedly mentions the ES 300 as anything sporty. That said, the car holds its own against those competitors designed from the ground up as sports sedans. 0â€"100 kmph times are within MOTORS VVOLVO 450 Belmont Ave. W. 1993 SAAB 9000 CSE Lease tor GAI month Lease based on 48 month term $2,000 down, taxes and licencing extra m K | T CH ENE R «==== SATUVRN@SAABeISUZU 744â€"5811
