PAGE 20 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1993 Suprisingly Sweet Relief With one eye on his dubious punk roots and the other on MTV glory, Billy Idol has done a highly successful job of walking the line between macho rocker and video star. Other than several memoâ€" rable hits however, he‘s never made a great album and now he‘s being roundly denounced for tying in William Gibson‘s scifi writings with his own punk vision. But the key here is to forget the lyrics and the Gibson influence â€" gobbledygook to most of us, anyway â€" and focus on what is some of Idol‘s catchiest material in years. While definitely a record for the computer age â€" programming dominates many of the tracks â€" there are enough memorable melodies and blazing guitars (courtesy of Mark Youngerâ€"Smith) to give it a rock and roll heart. Various Artists Musicians have been known to band together when hard times strike a comrade. Such is the case with Sweet Relief, a project to raise money for Victoria Williams, a talented singer/songâ€" writer diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last n:tu%immwflï¬aï¬nï¬:" â€wpcrtwdwforwmh:m&t sary and we‘re pulling out the stops to make conjunction with ahighlyanticipated, entertaining sure it is the best ever. (arnival B[§fH agt _ ll)at BP]]U[I o B jikeri a Can you believe we‘re 5 years old? And who has more fun than we do? Williams isn‘t a wellknown name but most of the artists involved here certainly are. And the fact that the songs are exclusively Williams‘ makes this fundraiser as much a tribute to a speâ€" cial talent. The contributions are uniformly excellent and hardly predictable. Soul Asylum is in fine form, offering a stirring version of the chilling Summer of Drugs. Ditto for Pearl Jam, who explore some uncharted territory with the countrified Crazy Mary. Other highlights include Lou Reed‘s moving Tarbelly and Featherfoot, The Jayhawks‘ Lights and Giant Sand‘s.Big Fish. Great cause. Great record.
