Doubleday, $27.50 . â€" «« This is quoted in the latest issue of Whole Earth Review, their 25th anniversary issue. As I‘ve come to expect, the magaâ€" zine is loaded with a diverse spectrum .of articles and ideas. Stewart Brand, the founder and editor from 1968 to ‘84 is back as guest editor of this issue. As he says in the introduction, an editor‘s job is to stay out of the way, to let writers and readers connect unfettered. Schwartz‘s book is about preâ€" dicting the future not via trend watching _ but _ through stuwelling.Heu'ainsbminega exâ€" ecutives to be scenario builders and then suspend their disbelief in any or all futures. One method is to look back to a point at which you‘re looking forâ€" ward. "Imagine that you had been ‘trying to write the sceâ€" nario for your company, yourâ€" self, or your country 10 years ago. ... What would have been the plot, what were the driving forces, what were the critical elements, what could you have seen then that you didn‘t?" The act of scenario building is central to a long article in the same issue called ‘Based on a True Story‘ by Ron Jones. He set up an experiment in his hisâ€" tory class at a California high school in 1967. Called The Wave, it was a oneâ€"day exercise in the "power of discipline" but five days later had recruited 300 students who gave up their freedom for the promise of being superior to their classâ€" mates. Jones talks about how the experiment in Fascism, which he wrote up in an article in Whole Earth in 1976. What it showed them was what happened in Nazi Gerâ€" And.so Jones was invited in mA B3 a conference on neofascism. What follows makes for fasciâ€" nating reading. He realizes that he his there not to lecture on humanitarian good, or explain The Wave, but "to exorcise the guilt that is Fascism". And he recalls an earlier visit in T986 at the invitation of Eva Mozes, a survivor of Joseph Mengele‘s Twins, those children taken at Auschwitz to spawn a master race. Eva used her own savings to and local students but she is stonewalled by the school authorities and only ashandful of survivors show up. Nonetheâ€" less, Eva speaks from the heart:"This afternoon we will tell the ‘children about Joseph Menâ€" gele and how racial hatred and prejudice can lead to Fascism, how it starts one step at a time to rob you and of your identity 1992 to Nuremburg to address 100 King St. South Opposite Waterloo Square Open 9 to 9 Mon.â€"Fri.
