24, 1993 By Gary Highfield . When fellow writer, Ian Macpherson, called me to let me know that I had been booked to test drive the new Nissan Altima, I approached the task with some trepidation. The Altima was Nissan‘s replacement for the aging, someâ€" what boxy Stanza, a car for which I had absolutely no time. The Stanza was a plain underpowered econoâ€"box as far as I was concerned and I didn‘t have high hopes for a car that was supposed to replace it. Also, the Altima is aimed at the Camry and Cronos market and after having tested both cars I expected to be sorely disappointed with the Altima, which appeared to be a much inferior product. S Boy was I wrong! The Altima GLE that Nissan provided, practically blew me away with its graceful styling, plentiful power and exceptional road manners. Even now, I find it hard to put my finger on exactly what the Altima did to change my mind. All I know is that when I see an Altima on the road, I will have a newâ€"found respect for the car. Let‘s face it, in the market at which the Altima is aimed, it is pretty hard to find a unique design. What we need isn‘t always what we want. But if you have the need for more practical "hauling space" â€" and a desire for a car that rewards your decision every time you get behind the wheel, you‘ll find both in the BMW 525i Touring. All at a price that‘il come as a pleasant surprise! Consider the comfort and the generous amount of usable room that the Touring provides â€" and then get right down to the sheer joy of driving this elegant. responsive, stickâ€"toâ€"theâ€"road BMW. It is quite refreshing then, to see Nissan break the habit and give the Altima a singular look that imparts balance and grace. If you‘ve seen the Infiniti J30, ywhnwthemdtbeaedai@mï¬nndï¬nishisn exceptional as is expected of any carmaker these days. Some concern should be pointed out with the rear doors, which are fairly small and make entry and exit somewhat of a contorâ€" tionist‘s nightmare. From the outside, the Altima looks small. However, setâ€" tled into the driver‘s seat, I found interior space to be quite substantial even for me. Head room was a bit limited but when you are 6‘4", headroom is limited wherever you go. ‘There‘s plenty of lateral space in the cab and the greenhouse design affords excellent outward vision as well as allowing amplomnlhinetofloodin.’l‘hemï¬ngwbeelhnï¬lt adjustment and fell right into my hands as did the signal, large, legible and easy to use, my one complaint being the inability of the air conditioning to keep up to all that sunâ€" Starting at $52,500* WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 7, 1983 â€" PAGE 31 Grace and comfort are all fine and dandy but it‘s perforâ€" mance and handling that wins the day and the Altima surely takes first place. The Altima was born to hustle. A 150 hp inâ€"line four graces all models of the Altima and proâ€" vides 0â€"60 mph numbers that humiliate the competition The GLE‘s time of 8.7 seconds is a full one and one half secâ€" onds faster than the Camry with its four cylinder. The gap continues to open as the quarter mile approaches. The ride is predictable and taut, thanks in part to Goodyear Eagle GA tires mounted on very attractive cast wheels. On the skidpad, the Altima is once again best in shine except on the highest setting (constantly). Back seat room is quite tight as you can imagine.
