What do you know about any of those people? Are they liberal or conservative by nature? What are their feelings about abortion? And how do they react to women's issues? These are all vital questions that need to be answered - and the public has a right to know wherejudges stand before they're appointed to the Supreme Court. Right now, federal judges are unilaterally appointed by the federal cabinet, There are no hearings and no public debates. The American system. by contrast, has each of its nominees subjected to intense scrutiny by the Senate of the United States. And what's wrong with that? Why can't We subject our nonli‘inees - with the vast potential for power that they hold - m f. A can- m--'l and, But it is important to remember that these people have exercised so much power in their lifetimes on the Bench that the authority given to elected members of the House of Representa- tives and Senate in the United States pales by comparison. That is because the United States has been governed for over 200 years by a Bill of Rights which stands above any law that is passed by politicans and which must ultimately fit within its framework. By interpreting this Bill of Rights, the nine judges on the Supreme Court have gained enormous power by either striking down or supporting various pieces of legislation. And therein lies the rub. Who on earth ever thought that a democracy would ever be governed by nine unelected people? And who would ever conceive that they'd have more say than elected representa- twee? It is highly instructive to watch what occurs on the Supreme Court of the United States because what happens there is a good indication of what will soon happen in this country WE {in undarmi'l" " “m" -= ‘l - __ .
