nllirlthhs s'deu'tl,iih0:t'li"l, m, 455 King St. N. Waterloo, Ontario For over 40 years I was the landscape supervisor and gardener at Mutual Life and I was very proud of our lawns and gardens on which I never used many of the methods that are being used today. In fact, when I started out very few power mowers were in existence and all this spraying equipment wasn’t even heard of. We had hand-push reel type mowers which are still a good machine for mowing lawns proper- ly, and a hand pump spray can for any insects on the flowers or shrubs. For the care of lawns, in the spring we would rake the lawn, clean up the winter debris, then we would set our lawn mower very low and "ghave" the lawn as close as we could, down into the old, dead grass. We would then rake up all the dead grass. Following this, we would get a good fertilizer like milorganite or a vigsro at ttMM, or turf special at 1064, and spread it on at one pound to 40 sq. ft, and water it it iftinuGe got ua"'tiai7iiiG'iii values which seemed to have served us will over theiyears. Caring for your lawn is a lit simpler than yqu think. I have been reading for some time about the interest and care of lawns in the city in regards to the environment and the aces sive garbage that is being created. If you mow with a dull blade it bruises the grass tips and your lawn will be inclined to look brown. If you miss mowing the grass for a few weeks, cut it just the same then let the grass clippings sit for a day or two and them rake them up. You will get about a half-bag of dead grass which is light as a feather and will not So, as for mowing today, I would recom- mend to take off the grass catchers and mow once a week and your lawn will look just as good. The cut grass withers down to nothing in just one day and provides food for., the lawn at the some time. In the summer we would raise our mower up to orte.ttmra.half to two inches and mow at that level all summer. never catching the grass. The lawn needed that cut grass to hold the moisture in and nourish it, If it got too untidy, we would rake it when needed. As for the weeds, dandelion, were always premnt, but we would take the time and cut them out. This was very good as a back exercise. Later, they introduced the weed spray which was supposed to eliminate the exercise that we needed. We then used the weed spray once a year, starting around the first of June and it would last all season. in well. I have found that a good applicw tion of 1tMM once a year is plenty, I have been using the "no name" brand at a cost Most people's lawns have blue grass ,or feacues which grow straight up and don't need tiethatching. Aerating the lawn isn't needed either because the dew worms take care of this, that is. if you don't spray your lawn with insecticides which will kill the worms. Another point I want to mention is. dethatching is overused. Dethatching is primarily for golf putting greens because they use creeping bent grass, which if not kept under control, creates a bumpy sur face; and of course, a smooth surface 18 essential for a putting green which should have a carpet-like cushion effect, I have experimented both ways. Mowing with the catcher on, picking up green grass will produce for 3,000 sq. ft. of lawn about four garbage bags of heavy, soggy grass which will create methane gas in the garbage dump, and this is what the environmentalists are complaining about. My theory is that this is absolutely unnewssary, as well as throwing in the dump each week tour or fnre garbage bags costing horn 26 to 40 cents each. If you get yourself a 10-gallon plastic garbage can it will last you for years and the only thing you have to do is carry it back to your house every week C big deal! cause any further deey mm“ as 1 Pl 3 rttrrl “women mom“ 1 n m..
