PAGE A32 â€" WATERLOO CHRONIC Chronicle Staff All the conditions were perfect for a establishâ€" ing a new course record at the Oktoberfest Invitational high school run on the hills of the Chicopee Ski Club. _‘ Temperatures were in the high 50s.,;A gentle breeze was blowing from the west and‘the skies were blue. All Angela Schwan had to do was to compliment these conditions with a nearâ€"perâ€" fect run. Schwan, a Grade 11 Waterloo Collegiate Institute junior crossâ€"country runner, knew the course, after all she established the record on the 4,100â€"m course last year with a time of 15 minutes and 31 seconds. These hills were hers and hers alone. Schwan accomplished what she set out to do, by slashing 22 seconds off her old record, but it took a kick in the final 200â€"m for her to pull ahead for the win. The amazing Angela trailed Jennifer Guzâ€" man of Etobicoke by 10 seconds at the 3,000 metre mark, but caught up to and eventually passed the fading Guzman in the home stretch for an amazing 15:09 minute run. "I really like the hills on this course. Gusman had a 15â€"metre lead on me for most of the race, but I guess I had a strong kick when I needed it," Schwan said. "I felt good coming out of the forest and I knew I had to do it. After all, no pain, no gain," she said with a grin. Guzman finished second with a time of 15:17 minutes. While Schwan felt little pain, teammate Cathy Butler, suffering with a cold, developed a cramp halfway in the run to finish third with a time of 16:05. "On Monday I really felt sick with this cold and I didn‘t know if I was going to run Schwan finished third. Guzman of Etobicoke was second at the run. | "We‘re all friends," Schwan said of Butler and Guzman. "Although the only k“ really see each other is at runs such as this one, the Texaco Mile or at OFSSAA m Federation Secondary School Athletic Ass Many of the runners at the Oktoberfest run will most likely be at the OFSSAA, which is the top high school meet in the province. At last years OFSSAA‘s Schwan captured a gold medal while Butler reaped a silver in the junior girls‘ division. According to WCI coach Rina Moss the junior team has a lot of potential this year, especially in having two medal winners from last year‘s team on it. While the junior team looks good, and the midget team continues to improve at each and mry}qaet,Mosdoesn'thaveannhgirh "We had aiï¬:lgraduate, that‘s the whole senior team. I the team for five years with the team getting a medal each year, with the exception of last year," Moss said. However the future looks raty good for Moss as she‘ll have runners like Butler and Schwan for at least another couple of seasons, once again giving WCI a strong profile in team this year. prithe Alimrttme stt camimt > â€"_casthstsatieccace. 4c nidh I‘minâ€"geod *L n _ mm 0 ce _ Just four%equiq:.
