Along the way Mike married his lovely wife, Adieâ€"Jane Fraser, and their children Michelle, Valerie, Michael and Tony, are all musicians today. In addition to teaching, Bergauer founded the first Music Day Camp in Canada and started and conducted the Kâ€"W Junior Symphony (now the Youth Orchestra in the Centre. Mike also formed 10 dance bands and at one point had six different bands going it the same time. As an author, he has written Waterloo‘s own Mike Bergauer was given a standing ovation at the end of his 205th and final high school concert recently just before he retires in June. Known as Mr. Music and the Lester Lanin of Canadian bands, there was a time in the ‘70s when you could dance to one of his six orchestras almost every night of the week. Mike was musically inclined and at age 10 his father bought him a battered old trumpet. The famous Professor Thiele took Mike under his wing and at age 11 with his first pair of long pants, played his first cornet solo at the Waterloo park weekly Sundayâ€"night concert. At age 15, Bergauer started his own orchestra which became the youngest Profesâ€" sional Dance Band in Canada. It wasn‘t long before the band was playing over 200 nights a vear. In high school, Mike was very active at St. Jerome‘s where he received the first Honor J and the city‘s Citizenship Award of the year on his graduation.
