He approaches songwriting with a raré sense of adventure and the results are unafâ€" fected songs that drift dangerously close to the mainstream, then soar in all sorts of intriguing directions. His second album, The Sky And The Grouxfi? isn‘t immediately accessible, but like its preâ€" decessor; gradually reveals a hidden charm. Because Turner likes to bend his melodies and rhythms into odd shapes, the songs have a detached, unsettling feel. But it‘s this kind of devious playfuiness that makes each track a pleasant discovery. Turner forces us to be â€" HauhquMun’tbemuedofnotmking his ‘time. Since releasing the criticallyâ€"acâ€" claimed Inside in 1986, this talented New York singer/songwriter has been virtually reclusive, other than touring with the Golden Palominos in 1987. Several albums and much success later, they‘re a bland, increasingly depressing singles band. They‘ve settled into a commercially rewarding habit of releasing nondescript alâ€" bums saved only by one or two catchy singles. The trend continues with Calm Animals. Driven Out, the first single, is another radio staple and true to form, it‘s the only standout cut. Of course the Fixx and radio have lots in common â€" a few good songs and plenty of filler.
