PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 1, 1989 Wendy Somerville Ho hum. Guess who‘s come out with another ClA versus the KGB, rough ‘m up, good ol‘ foreign espionage flick this time? If you haven‘t seen enough of them, then catch the Shah/Arama production of Black Eagle. It‘s got every component of a runâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"mill spy movie you could imagine â€" with spectacular solid fight scenes by toplined Ken Tans (Sho Kosugi). Tani is the American government‘s top freelance agent, who is called away from his mission in Afghanistan to retrieve a Fâ€"111 in Maita. The jet has crashed with a secret laser guidance system on board. To entice Tani into accepting the mission, the move‘s plot takes on an overstretched example of poetic licenee. The spy‘s sons will be allowed to come to the very scene of the struggle with the Russians, with a promise of a joyful reunion. Makes sense. Just like a nineâ€"toâ€"five job â€" kiss the boys goodbye in the morning, go out and do that spy stuff, and be home in time for dinner Tanmi is disguised as a Japanese marine scientist hired to assist in locating the sunken fighter plane, but the KGB discovers his true identity and calls on Ho, Hum. Another spy ‘thriller Please note that effective February 12 the main telephone number for the Doon (Kitchener) Campus and for Conestoga College Administration will be Number 653â€"2511 will be discontinued. Callers from Cambridge (Gait) may use number 653â€"1316 to avoid long distance charges. All other 748 exchange numbers established in 1988 at Doon and College Administration will remain in effect for directâ€"inâ€"dial Sho Kosugi stars in the action "thriller," Black Eagles. Telephone Number Change N O T T C E (519) 748â€"5220 Ultimately, the film suffers a terrible death after the boring and predictable climax of the inevitable handâ€"toâ€"hand battle between Tani and Andrei. And even this predictability isn‘t played up for all its worth â€" the movie just kind of peters out. Black Eagle is pleasant enough, but spy films shouldn‘t be pléasant, they should be gripping and this one definitely lacks the bite it needs. It‘s a shame moviegoers couldn‘t be treated with a fresh spy plot complete with actionâ€"packed sequences to wet their appetites. the assassins (or guys who‘re going to aid in the wonderful fight scenes). The Russians fail miserably and resort to kidnapping Tani‘s boys and his beautifu) _ associate, Patricia (Doran Clark). Tani don‘t like dis. He gets mad and takes on the entire Russian stronghold to rescue his beloveds, which results in a confrontation with Andrei â€" a guy who knows martial arts as well as our hero here. It‘s these wellâ€"choreographed fight scenes and attractive onâ€"location Malta shots that might save the film. Also, Andrei is Brussel‘s current heartâ€" throb Jeanâ€"Claude Van Damme, the same guy who made his mark in Cannon‘s Bloodsport.
