LETTERS Appalling treatment of Demjanjuk In the eight months since his trial opened, Jorin wemjanjuk has been hurt three times. All three injuries were incurred in the same way: in the prison van on route between his cell and the courtroom. The episodes are a matter of public record. The first mishap occurred Feb. 26, the first day of the trial. With feet and hands shackled, Demjanjuk was driven the 80 kilometers from his prison cell to the courtroom. By the time he arrived, Demjanjuk was sufficiently battered and bruised about the head to require treatâ€" ment and medication. Medication that induced a feeling of disorientation in the prisoner just when he needed to be at his most lucid: as the charges against him Several weeks ago as I scrutinized the bookstores for suggested Christmas gift ideas, I discovered the book entitled 5BX Plan For Physical Fitness. Rather than give it a brief review as I did the other books, I felt the book deserved a column unto itself. The book initially caught my attention because I knew my father has followed the. plan, the original plan designed almost 30 years ago, and because I knew the book was Canadian. After looking at all the other fitness and health books by famous American stars, I hoped the Canadian book would give me what I had hoped for. It did. Published by Supply and Services Canada, the book which means "five basic exercises," is designed for males of various ages. (There is also a publication for females entitled XBX Plan For Physiâ€" cal Fitness. I have ordered it but as of yet not received it.) The program boasts its simplicity, effectiveness and foremost its briefness. It‘s designed to take only 11 minutes a day. _fFeedback Due to the briefness of the book, many fitness leaders will argue that 11 miâ€" nutes is not time enough to work all the muscles. And it‘s not. However, the exercises do work the major muscles and encourages and motivates men who otherwise do not want to spend time and money going to a club. The new edition, printed in 1986, includes the same information on physiâ€" cal fitness, weight control and energy efficiency as the old edition and includes the old 1950s graphics. Marked in levels from Dâ€" to A + (12 levels in each cart, 72 levels in all), the chart allows for plenty of time to gradually increase strength and endurance. For example, the easiest level indicates that two pushâ€"ups be performed in one minute. The most difficult level requires the performance of a more advanced pushâ€"up to be repeated 40 times in the same one minute time frame. Each level of each chart is to be done at least four days before advancing to a more difficult level. If more time is required or age or health bars progress you would remain at a comfortable level longer. Here are the five exercises: While some people will have to modify the exercises with the advice of a physiâ€" cian in the event of back trouble, the progression does allow for the advanced levels to be introduced safely. The second mishap occurred June 23. Once again, with feet and hands bound, Demjanjuk was unable to avoid being pitched against the wall of the van and severely injuring his shoulder. An injury that has since caused him chronic pain. The third mishap occurred recently, Nov. 23. The result has been a painful back injury; the reason: a slipped disc. Demjanjuk now finds it painfully diffiâ€" cult either to stand up or stretch comâ€" pletely. I call these episodes mishaps, although seeing their frequency and similarity, many cannot help wondering if they have not been the fruit of deliberate malice. There is, moreover, a sad irony to these episodes, happening as they have against a backdrop of elaborate security precautions. Intended, we are told, so no harm befalls the prisoner. During his 20 months of captivity in Israel, Demjanjuk has been guarded ‘‘Yes, they wouldn‘t have made an effort to meet Reagan if they weren‘t serious. The Americans take a peripheral view of the Soviet Union." Dave Shaw Waterloo Do you believe Mikhail Gorbachev has genuine concern for world peace? round the clock. The powerful light in his cell has never been extinguished. All his movements are monitored by guards and cameras. Until this past April, loudspeakers installed in the prisoner‘s cell had blared for the inquiry "Is the prisoner all right?" an average of 96 times a day; that is, every 15 minutes of a 24â€"hour day. He has, by now, spent one Christmas and two Easters in Ayalon Prison. On those high holidays, Demjanjuk â€" a devout Christian â€" had been unable to partake of Holy Communion. The reaâ€" son: his Israeli jailers insisted the chalice bearing the sacramental wine and bread be screened by a metal detector as an added security precauâ€" tion. A prerequisite Bishop Anthony, Demjanjuk‘s confessor, naturally could not and would not countenance in view of its irreverent and profane character. When viewed against this backdrop, it becomes harder to dismiss Demjanjuk‘s Our environment carries with it an allâ€" embracing suggestion as to our place in the world. Everything we see during the day suggests something to us and so motivates us one way or another. We all have, and daily use, a power for good or bad. Experts in the fields of the humanities and the motivational sciences have long been aware of the power of suggestion in shaping our lives. And there is far more to it than the spoken word. Conversely, the one who says, "You‘re a bad child, you never do anything right, you can‘t keep out of trouble for a minute," is using the power destructiveâ€" ly, to make the child feel bad and worthless in the eyes of others, which can lead to neurosis and rebellion if repeated often enough. . When dealing with each other, with our loved ones, neighbors, associates and strangers, we use the power of suggestion to color and shape their lives as well as our own. Even the person on a crowded elevator who says to a friend, "A miserable day, isn‘t it?", affects the attitude of every person within earshot with a negative effect, not calculated to brighten anyâ€" one‘s day, including his own. The person who says to a child, "That‘s great, but I know you can do better if you really want to," is using the power of suggestion in a positive healthy way to build up the child‘s selfâ€"image and sen se of worth and value. Telling individuals that they look poorly, or ill, can set them on the road towards feeling and looking worse. Tellâ€" ing them they look great brightens their day and improves their selfâ€"image. ‘"No, I don‘t trust them, they can‘t keep up with the West so they are trying to slow us down." French psychotherapist, was the authoriâ€" ty on autoâ€"suggestion and he recommendâ€" ed that everyone should repeat: Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better. Hypochondriacs do just the opposite to convince themselves that they are sick. They also try their best to convince everyone else, with their constant dreary bleating pulling a shroud of gloom arâ€" ound their lives. They see themselves in perfect health and know that everything works out for the best. They may occasionally fall ill and know that all is not well with the entire world. But even so, in using their power of suggestion in a positive, healthful way, they are working toward perfection, so that, no matter how slow their progress might be, they are moving in the right direction. On the other hand, there are the positive people who, knowing the treâ€" mendous power of suggestion, use it for their own good. Every day, they make positive affirmations of where they are heading in the full expectation that they‘re going to get there. You might want to think about this, for the very essence of positive thinking is autoâ€"suggestion, which ties into another lesson in practical psychology which is so little understood: "As ye believe, so shall it be done unto thee." Still, he has not been without his defenders. Bishop Anthony and former White House Communications Director Patrick Buchanan have protested his innocence. Columnist Barbara Amiel and historian Nikolai Tolstoy have expressed grave reservations concerning judicial fairness at his trial. They fear, as many do, that John Demjanjuk may end up the fall guy in this affair in more than just the literal sense. _ _ ‘‘Yes, they have to be concerned about the threat of nuclear arms. They can‘t be as evil as we are led to believe" Abuses, both major and petty, have been heaped upon this man for over a decade now. Yet, the only crime he ever was convicted of was a civil offence.
