PAGE B10 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 16, 1987 University of Waterloo Press‘ Atlas of the Breedâ€" ing Birds of Ontario has taken off to praise from naturalists across the province and beyond. The 640â€"page book showing where nearly 300 species of birds breed in this province was released in September. The Atlas took five years of field work by the province‘s birdwatchers, and was a project of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists and the Long Point Bird Observatory. It was designed by University of Waterloo graphic artists, published by the University Press, and coâ€" edited by UW recreation professor Paul Eagles, Trent University geography professor Fred Helleinâ€" er, and FON Atlas Coordinator Mike Cadman. Almost 300 illustrations by 12 different artists are included with the text, as well as computerâ€"proâ€" duced maps for each species. ‘"‘The maps make it possible to see the general pattern of the birds‘ distribution in Ontario, or to see precisely where that species does not occur," said Cadman. ‘"You can easily see which birds can be expected around your home town, cottage or favorite hiking, canoeing or camping area. ‘"Conversely, any bird you see can be checked in the Atlas to determine if it‘s a rare species and whether or not it normally occurs where you saw it. The text accompanying each map describes the natural history of the species, and explains why the bird occurs where it does," Cadman explains. ‘"The project was a massive undertaking," Eagles said. ‘"We enlisted the help of 1,400 volunteers, each covering a territory or ‘atlas square‘ of 10â€"square kilometres. In some cases, volunteers covered many more than one square." "Our volunteers came from all over Ontario and Canada, and even some parts of the U.S. and A mark of their dedication is that some spent almost every wakinig hour they had to spare in their territory trying to find species of birds, or confirmâ€" ing sightings they had earlier seen or suspected. The Atlas has only been out for a few weeks, but already it is being described as a necessary tool for birdâ€"watching. Notes Peter Whelan in his Globe and Mail birdâ€"watching column: "Immediately, the atlas earns a place on the bookshelves of both serious ornithologists and weekend hobbyists. Birdâ€" ing newcomers will want it quickly; it readily answers so many questions.‘" It took an estimated 180,000 hours of field work, including innumerable kilometres of walking, caâ€" noeing, climbing and flying over 5 years to get the job done. Many of the volunteer birders stayed in tents in the bush for days on end. Northern Ontario was covered using a grid of 100 x 100 km blocks. *"One of our volunteers, Chris Bell, from Sudbury, was making a special trek into a part of his territory that he had been trying to get into for some time. It was deep in the bush, with only a small logging path leading in. ‘"One day he was riding down that path on his bicycle, and he came upon a black bear sitting smack right in the middle of the path. He stopped, thought it over, realized it might be the only time he would be able to get into that part of his territory â€" got back on his bike and raced past the bewildered Designers. importers and Manujacturers of Fine Jeweller; 8 King St. East, Kitchener (519) 745â€"5058 |Across from the Walper Terrace Hotel) 56 St George‘s Square.
