Chronicle Staft Roger Caron neither looks nor sounds like a criminal. But he was; and to an audience of about 250 at Wilfrid Laurier University last week he spoke about his 24 years imprisonment. Caron is the author of Goâ€"Boy!, his autobiography which won the Governorâ€"General‘s Award for nonâ€"fiction in 1978, and Bingo!, an insider‘s version of the 1971 Kingston Penitentiary riot. The intense audience responded with some laughter but more understanding when Caron reâ€" cited ironies and amusing anecâ€" dotes about prison life. Like the time when an artist smuggled a threeâ€"foot garter snake into his cell as a pet, painted him fluoresâ€" cent colors and flushed him down the toilet into the cell of a transâ€" vestite prisoner who was terrified of snakes. Or when he described the "teleâ€" phone system"‘ prisoners in solitâ€" ary confinement made of their toilets and sewer system. If you wanted to talk to the person in cell seven, the convict would tap seven times through the pipes. ‘"And if you were really bored, you‘d tap three times for the party line." Caron heard about John F. Kennedy‘s assassination through the "telephone". Prison life wasn‘t always funny or ever bearable. Caron described his experiences in solitary conâ€" finement with guards he identiâ€" fied as "the goon squad". He spoke about beatings, tear gas, mental torment and the continuâ€" ally shining light in "the hole". He described prisoner suicides so Ten beauntul coms, cele ‘ branng ten Olympic events Each contains one Troy ounce of pure siver. People always tell me they do things for "my own good", Caron sard. "In prison they said we‘re going to give you shock treatâ€" ments two times a week â€" for your own good." Caron‘s prison life began at 16 after robbing a sporting goods store. He began robbing banks and wound up in almost every maximum security prison in Caâ€" nada. He attempted 13 escapes and succeeded six times. He said he turned wardens into deputyâ€" wardens and superintendents into assistant superintendents. He was known as ‘"Madâ€"Dog Caron" and no warden in the country wanted him in his prison. After one bank robbery he was sent to a penitentiary wrapped up in chains and shackles only to be refused entry by the warden. Only after the warden received official notice about a week later did he take Caron into the prison. ‘‘Talk about feeling unwanted," Caron commented to the sympaâ€" LIMITED MINTAGE You will appreciate the beauty of this excep nonal coin when you see it So come in and buy one for yourself. Caron received a bag of jellyâ€"beans from the Salvation Army and was waiting until midnight to eat them when he remembered which guard was working. This particuâ€" lar guard would rattle his door or rap the key against the window just to see Caron jump. Obscene gestures and fistâ€"shaking angered the guard into physically abusing Caron. Caron spelt PIG on the floor and was amazed with the livid response by the guard. Caâ€" ron had discovered the power of words. With only a gradeâ€"six education he began to print stories until he finished Goâ€"Boy! after 15 years. It was the success of this novel which hastened his release. Caron has been out of prison for nine years and has only 10 months left of probation. But he said he will never forget where he came from. He doesn‘t smoke, or drink, or do drugs. He doesn‘t party or go into bars. Adjusting to the outside world has been hard â€" "I feel the moment I start enjoying life the roof will cave He‘s kept busy writing JoJo, a story about an Indian wanting revenge after the Prime Minister kills his girlfriend, and has started Dream Caper, a novel about a convict who dreams about a successful bank robbery. in."
