Nor will any other Siskin freshâ€" man for that matter. It was initiation night, the ageâ€" old hockey tradition that allows veteran players to "welcome" the new arrivals to the club. And as Strohack found out that evening, it‘s usually the veterans that get all the laughs. It was a bus ride that Waterloo Siskin rookie defenceman Mark Strohack will not soon forget. _ Lean and Brad Haelzle in the pintâ€"sized bus bathroom, all three wearing nothing but a smile. . Rookie goaltender Dave Motz also got a haircut, and a rather creative one at that. Carved into one side of is hair is the number 31, on the other side the letter W. Fortunately for Strohack and the other rookies, initiation only happens once. So with that all behind them now, they can reâ€"foâ€" cus their attention on keeping the club near the top of the Midwestâ€" ern Junior B standings. Siskins slipped from firstâ€"place this weekend, earning just a single point from a homeâ€"andâ€" away series with thirdâ€"place Stratford _ Cullitons. _ Siskins earned a 7â€"7 overtime draw Sunâ€" day in Waterloo and lost a 7â€"6 squeaker in Stratford Friday. Meanwhile, Elmira Sugar Kings whipped _ Cambridge _ Winter Hawks 8â€"0 and Guelph Bs 19â€"6 to move into sole possession of first place. ‘"‘Well, they kind of gave me a haircut, everywhere," said Stroâ€" hack, 16, at a recent practice. â€" In addition to the haircut, the veterans "kind of" locked Stro hack and teammates Jeff Macâ€" Strohack‘s contribution to the team was felt immediately this season. A graduate of the Waterâ€" loo minor hockey system, the 6‘1" rearguard enjoys the pressure of playing in his hometown. "It‘s a lot more fun playing at home, but there is pressure," said Strohack, a graduate of last year‘s Waterloo Chevys allâ€"Onâ€" tario midget championship team. A grade 11 student at Bluevale collegiate, Strohack is hoping to impress a scout or two this season in hopes of graduating to the Junior A level. ‘"I‘ve always wanted to play Junior A, and with this being my draft year, I‘m hoping I can impress someone," he said. By his own admission, Strohack will have to improve his: foot speed to achieve his goal, but it‘s something he‘s sure he can do. Unlike many others who have donned the Siskins‘ sweater at the age of 16, Strohack does not feel intimidated skating against the league‘s‘ more experienced players. "I felt a little intimidated at the beginning of the season, but once I got out there and threw a couple checks, I realized I could play here. Some of the veterans like Larry Rucchin, Don Oberle and Mike Gingerich have been a big help too," he said. "I just want to help the team in any way I can." On Friday against Stratford, Siskins fell behind 5â€"0 in the first period and eventually tied the game at six, before giving up a thirdâ€"period goal. Mike MacKay, Shawn DuBois, Rob Warren, Paul Dan Rintche scored for Waterloo. Rintche clinched the tie Sunâ€" day, scoring with just four secâ€" onds left in the thirdâ€"period.
