DISC Like Genesis, Split Enz started out as an eccentic, artâ€"rock outfit which gradually tired of being treated as such. In the early ‘80s, the band finally found its niche with the offbeat, threeâ€"minute pop song. It was a formula that produced a number of hits â€" "I Got You", ‘‘*Six Months In A Leaky Boat", "One Step History Never Repeats Split Enz A&M Like Lennon and McCartney â€" whom they are often compared to â€" Difford and Tilbrook are masters of juxâ€"taposing a great melody with a feeling of melancholy. It‘s a rare gift, but so far it hasn‘t produced that big hit. And as good as Babylon and On is, that hit probably isn‘t here. Squeeze A&M Squeeze are back where they left off a few years ago. The creative core is intact with chief songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook returning to the glib style that made Squeeze the most refreshing pop band of the postâ€"punk onslaught. Difford and Tilbrook dish up an assortment of charming, wellâ€"crafted pop songs built around catchy turns of phrase and Jools Holland‘s jaunty keyboards. In a stagnant genre plagued by overcrowding, it‘s been an insurmountable task. Tantamount, 1 suppose, to figuring out the Caramilk secret or inventing fool proof coffee lids. Def Leppard is the driving force behind *‘*project facelift". While others flog a tired horse, Def Leppard is at least taking some chances. Think of it as sort of a grandiose, Tim Riceâ€"Andrew Lloyd Webber approach to heavy metal. Not surprisingly, History Never Repeats concentrates on material from the band‘s last few albums (the disbanded in 1984). Fans of earlier work will probably miss the flamboyâ€" ant edge, but the songs here are at least a pleasant reminder of a rather inconsequential pop era. KAREN PATKAU, illustrator of the beautiful book RINGTAIL, will be showing us samples of her ingenious work. Karen has also illustrated two other books, DON‘T EAT SPIDERS and ONE WATERMELON SEED.
