It & one thing for council to hold private sessions, quite another to expect that public goals and objectives are beyond immediate discussion and debate. Telegdi can achieve that end, with a clear conscience. and next year at this time remind voters who share his feelings, of the stance he took. ?'csi') “wt-39%):f' HIE»); "'"hxery. raw/9% 13-h Cy 'sirmai"aCt:siosaost;rewasrts8t A my; , c.,'," fv,,cvsjii's,ss, "fi, '," e;,,')',';:" ' g ""'tt'ie; "o'1eer"'k'"1tiis'u:" "i'r-%1rr4,' 'ij.)).,,,., v- “E: Ik-tr ',oza,r,s,,),;i,ir;is/vo,c"'vs, c. er" _iy,sc(' "c?,';, W , _'p'cirr'_r't's"siv:'_':', “â€9"???†1; 1-3:» r; 41’†s,,safi,'iii., t'"" if: ,2 ;.1 J; 'o:st"-irse'sy"('is 1 :ry" 1 Fy scirict /'ecxrvetovAi, i:') _ rri"r- egg-"WV-gn- y'.;-' ’ _ _f,-"'1~17% it C osrenr_i' _ :YT’ -'-::-'-’-- _r'_'_'rsii,iirc"ji_rC'ii', 2’5: 'its;""'""" rc'",, ". ri"r'i""';" ir".,, _._ vriryi,eii)r:t_:e.',r'i.i', _"'"'" " ' l, 'f- y'"" "vi-iw ' " s1"S' Wï¬â€˜bï¬ï¬wwï¬ rvtit"ir'elr.ifi:'i;?i'r' 4‘ "°’""’=9:1r"“"“~‘ l 1-o,de " 'i Z'W'W} "sflrt',jj,'i:atlt"'jCi"i, wgwgï¬ yf" .V, "ill _,' ".'.e "low-stir-trss" "t Wwa , "rpVu "I, "ti.)':' ""'r'k"1W" "o"-'?;"?,: 8f The meetings. which in recent years have become high profile because council has held the sessions privately at out-of-town retreats (at taxpayer ex- pense), are seen by Telegdi as an opportunity to increase public involvement as the city charts its fu- ture. Angered at what he sees as an abuse of taxpayer dollars and the wrong way for public officials to conduct public business. Telegdi vowed last week to give the meetings a pass. This week. he also tried unsuccessfully to convince council to open the meetings to the public and media. Whether or not Waterloo taxpayers agree with having their municipal machinery guided by the drive wheel of private corporate strategy is a debate onto itself. However, now that Telegdi has officially recorded his opposition to both the format and expense of the sessions, he should still attend them and contribute valuable input as an elected official. To enable him to do so with clear conscience, he, along with any other dissenter, should pay his own way (giving full notice of such a move), attend the sessions, and, within the bounds of council propriety, avail himself to the media and/or general public as to the proceedings. t5re-dCursMniir-atg-Nt-Hrssq. ifGGFGU,RGi , -riirTLiTiisiaa"ie" iiiiriiciiii5i'ei" 12:; 'GG', line mam. What about the sad sack POWs and the German oats guarding them on Hogan's Heroes, a show that went twice as long as the war effort it represented. As noted, shows like M.A.s.H. and All in the Family were classics. but mainly because each broke new ground, combining humor with an attack on taboos of the day. They made it possible for today's shows to confront issues such as AIDS (Designing Women on Monday) in a tasteful. yet humorous way. But when I think of true sitcoms. the favorites on my list don't seem to carry much weight. Is my taste in humor out in left field, or what? Comedy. At its best. Week in and week out. Sadly, while today's sitcoms do their best (Family Ties, Cheers. Night Court. Golden Girls, Kate and Allie, Designing Women.
