The Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo Oktoberfest Men‘s and Women‘s Bodybuilding Classic takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at the University of Waterioo, Humanities Theatre. The prejudging starts at 9: 00 a.m. and offers a chance to see all competitors. The finals are at 7:00 p.m. Tim Callahan, Emmanuel Patterson and Jim Kaminski are proof that there is more to this muchâ€"maligned sport than meets the eye. For years, two hours a day, six days a week. they‘ve pushed and pulled weights to shape their bodies. Now each is pulling his weight to reâ€"shape people‘s thinking. The latter is proving to be equally exhausting. His is the classic case of the skinny kid who decides to do something about it after reading a muscle magazine. Said Kaminski: "I was tired of being picked on and finishing my brother‘s battles. Then I saw Arnold Schwarzenegger in a magazine." Five years later, he does the picking. Of course, the 90 lb weakling/sand in the face story is usually more fable than fact. So, it seems, is the bodybuilder as oneâ€"dimensional incredible hulk. â€" But having competed at higher levels of competition, Kaminski feels that bodybuilding has done most for his confidence and his capacity for handling the responsibilities of marriage and fullâ€"time university studies. Certainly not Kaminski. Unlike Callahan and Patterson, he won‘t be competing Saturday. But he does support their views on discipline and marketing of the sport. And he throws around catchworks such as ‘"ripped" and "bulk up." Imagine my disillusionment, then, when I discovered Kaminski also found intrinsic value in bodybuilding. Three in a row. Wasn‘t anyone going to discredit an already discredited sport? Jim Kaminski, I thought, would surely fit the mould. He met all the criteria: massive Vâ€"shaped upper body supported by an equally large pyramidâ€"shaped lower body; intimidating, don‘tâ€"botherâ€"meâ€"now look; an aura that suggested he‘d be the guy to know if you were having trouble with the neighbourhood bully. Charismatic and unaffected by his physical stature, he :O-om the fitnmess aspect. But also realizes it‘s hard because bodybuilders are often lumped into the dumb jock category . *‘Bodybuilding needs more positive advertising in order to eliminate the myths," Patterson said. "Promoting the sport means never letting a large ego get in the way or playing the role of jock." For that reason, you‘ll never see Patterson in undersized, muscleâ€"enhancing garments or any other symbols of jocksmanship. His clothes are specially tailored and to flout the stereotype, he prefers the baggy look. Patterson also sees bodybuilding as "a lifestyle that carries over into everything else you do." A former policeman, bodybuilding was once an antidote for tension. In his current job at the University of Waterloo, it plays an important role in the discipline required in juggling a hectic work schedule with his stringent training regimen. So how does one explain such insightful comments? Isn‘t reflecting supposed to be done in front of mirrors? Where were these grotesque flesh merchants I expected to find?
