Magnificent voice for and from rural Ontario scene Everyone is aware of the plight facing today‘s farmer with statistics of recession, draught, and floods. Those choosing to live off the land must endure nightmarish consequences of increasing crop failure, insect infestations, foreign takeover, farm bankruptcy and foreclosure. To a farmer surveying picturesque fields and meadows, the sight‘s anything but pretty. Over the seasons, The Blyth Festival and the UW Arts Centre have presented consistently highâ€" calibre theatre. In 1983, Chislett‘s Tomorrow Box drew seHâ€"out crowds and has continued to be a Blyth favorite. Though area audiences have tasted the homespun comedy of Cakeâ€"Walk, Garrison‘s Garage, Country Hearts, all brimming with down to earth rural hilarity and good natured jesting at the clown in all of us, this little theatre borough has also proved 021 itself a winner in the drama circuit. Another Season‘s Promise, coâ€"written by Chislett and Keith Roulston, is a timely noâ€"holdsâ€"barred look at the plight of modern farmers, set on Chislett‘s home soil of Huron County. But we don‘t witness firstâ€"hand the devastating effects on these farms. In Another Season‘s Promise, Chislett has once again, with empathic Coral Andrews That includes Ted Johns‘ comedies Country Hearts, Garrison‘s Garage, Colleen Curran‘s Cakeâ€"Walk, and dramas Quiet in the Land and The Tomorrow Box written by Festival coâ€"founder Anne Chislett. Campbell delivers a flesh and blood portrayal as farmer Ken Purves who cannot bring himself to face cold, hard reality, daily deluding his wife, country bumpkin turned successful Vancouver city slicker son Robert (John O‘Krancy), and grandson Sandy, a solid perforâ€" mance from 10â€"yearâ€"old Jerrod Button. Though Promise soars with a strong cast, veteran television actress Florence Paterson is riveting as Granny Purves, inviting the audience to feel her anguish and country girl joys. Paterson is invincible when she discovers and is forced to accept the final outcome. simlicity, focussed upon one man, Ken Purves and his eternal struggle to keep farm, family and sanity together, threatened with bankruptcy after putting his sweat and blood into this life‘s work for 40 years. He is faced with the destruction of a threeâ€"generation commitment, the strain taking its toll on each family member, from Granny Purves to impressionable grandson Sandy. It‘s a rural headache, a personal heartache. Another Season‘s Promise is another Blyth touring season hit, thanks to a superlative cast, smooth, even directing by Linda Moore and Chislett‘s fine detail sense of character conflict and contrast. Helen Purves is a troubled soul, once a city bred career woman, finally converted to country wife, happy with her lot in Huron County life. Nicola Lipman conveys this creeping angst through honesty and conviction mingled with the warmth and duty of the token farmer‘s wife. ; .
