These are the main characters in James Bank's “on Peter Pan and Wendy. Now the 50th anniver- sary of J ameo Barrie’s death has prompted a revival of liner-est in Peter Pan in both the publishing and theatrical world. “The Eternal Peter Pam" one of a trilogy of books issued by Tundra Books, is now available. Peter Pan: The Complete Book and Peter Pan: The Complete Play will be available in January 1988. All are illustrated by artist Susan Hudson. Her etchings and drawings illmtrate various passages from the original Peter Pan and Wendy book. The many-layered art reneets her exploration of the parallel worlds of appearance and dream combined to create the elusive fantasy of the Peter Pan theme. Peter Pan is often referred to as the Hamlet of chiidren's literature. It was undoubtedly written as a children's fantasy but it's not exclusively for children alone. rather it's for children of all ages. The original Peter Pan and Wendy was first performed as a play in 1904 in London and published as a novel in 1912. Every decade or so it appears in a different form with the story line and presentation altered to some degree. ttttrouge Spock! The most famous stage musical starring Mary Martin as the young boy Peter Pan proved a huge success. The Walt Disney animated film version proved a longtime favorite with young audiences. While Peter Pan enjoyed a moderate success in Britain in the first few years it was written, it was virtually ignored in America and continued to be so until the mid 1950s. However, compared to other children's literature. it has remained in low profile, The World of Books looselhly because it is the story of a boy who refuses to grow up. Adults found this idea unsavory and since adults choose and govern the hooks children read, many parents and teachers found this aspect rather disturbing to depart to young readers. Not only that, there were references to death that were judged to be beyond the comprehen~ sion of children. Author Barrie himself quite literally did not "grow up." he was barely over S' tall, affected childhood mannerisms and spent much of his time in the company of children. Undoubtedly Barrie did not intend his story of Peter Pan and Wendy to be taken literally. ls the symbolic flight of Peter Pan and Wendy the flight from life to death? "When children died he went part of the way with them so that they should not be frightened" or is it the story of a child who wishes to engage in the world of fantasy forever? "I don't want ever to be a man. I want always to be a little boy and to have fun." Others have speculated that Barrie person- ified his dead brother as Peter Pan, the boy who was forever a child in his mind and never grew up. "When I became a man _ . . he was still a boy of 13.” .
