Well, before West fronted the appropriatelyâ€"titled Mountain, he was the guitarist in a New York group called The Vagrants. The band was popular in the area but somehow got lost in the shuffie. The Great Lost Album is a collection of the band‘s singles and previously unreleased studio sessions. The R&B influence of the time â€" in particular The Rascals and Otis Redding â€" is prevalent throughout, but the latter was the real thing and the former had a knack for writing hit songs. What made the Vagrants different were the psychedelic flavour and West‘s fuzzy guitar. The problem is, most &o have seen 39 Steps probably don‘t remember the asion because they were too busy following the romantic misadventures of Woody Allen in Hannah and Her Sisters. Regardless, the cinematic exposure hasn‘t hurt this Montreal band and Slip Into The Crowd should be a huge musical boost. Their performance in the movie was suggestive of a New York punk band, but the album shows a definite Yardbirds influence. The flurry of guitars pushes the songs along at a frantic pace and even a cover of a Yardbird‘s cover â€" Mr. Your A Better Man Than I â€" works admirably. Derivative, yes; impressive, indeed. The Sound Of Music The dB‘s LR.S./MCA Here is a band that is probably more familiar to The failure of the dB‘s to be a commercial success is WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBEAR 16, 1987 â€" PAGE 23 one of the music industry‘s great mysteries. That they continue to record is testament to the band‘s perseâ€" verance. Consider the plight of this New York band. Their first two albums were released only in England and their last album, Like This, despite being one of 1984‘s better pop albums, was released only in the U.S. and was sadly ignored. If The Sound Of Music doesn‘t end the drought, nothing will. This is one of the best albums released this year, an instantly likeable gem that‘s chock full of memorable songs. Singer/guitarist Peter Holsapple confirms his status as one of pop‘s preeminent craftsman, a writer who borrows from many sources but like Squeeze‘s Difford and Tilbrook, injects enough hooks and twists to keep the music fresh. Even with much of the current focus on labelmates R.E.M. and the Vegasâ€"like posturing of David Bowie, music this good doesn‘t deserve to go unnoticed. To say the dB‘s time has arrived would be an understateâ€" ment. wa w m ma t Ti ie Mn t i aiit ue it oi pigtmri in
