They were telling me at the MDS Laboratories in the University Square Plaza that they may have to open a second Lab in Waterloo to handle the increased traffic. It seems MDS Labs was started to two engineers in Toronto about 20 years ago. They were involved in computers but quickly switched over to medical testing services when they saw the demand. There are already four Kitchener offices and now the expansion is starting in Waterloo. We were really impressed with the arrangements for the *‘Charity Golf Tournament" which was sponsored by Manufacturers Life Insurance at Foxwood. The committee of Tom Drake, John Clark, Jeff Hutcheson, Bill Inkol, Don Kerr, Gus Maue, Rich Putnam, and Jan Pender did an excellent job. During the tournament, we walked a few holes with Canada‘s former top woman professional Sandra Post and she said that the top moment in her career was when she won the Dinah Shore golf event. I asked why are there 10 junior boys taking up the sport to every girl? Sandra said the young boys don‘t seem to want to play golf with the girls at that age and tend to push them aside. Post also admitted that golf is not an easy game to learn and this discourages some girls. Regarding today‘s women touring pros, Sandra indicated there are more of them and they are being better coached with college scholarships. However, she felt none of them have a smoother swing than veteran Mickey Wright. If you haven‘t been down Columbia Road recently, you‘li be amazed to see the new University of Waterioo student residence that is in the final stage of completion. We‘ve been told there are 400 units each with four bedrooms and a common living area. Mutual Life provided the mortgage money to finance the "Columbia Lake Townhouses." In many respects, they remind me of the new student *village" which we stayed in last year at the University of British Columbia. The UBCâ€"townhouses were built on the campus for the visitors to Expo ‘86 and then turned over to the students for the autumn semester.
