Waterioo midgets Warriors came up a good, determined second best in their attempt to defend w Ontario baseball championship. just three piayers back from last year and nine firstâ€"year midgets in their lineup, Warriors made it all the way to the championship game in the tournament in Hamilton, only to lose 12â€"2 to Hamilton Mahoney on Sunday. The path to the championship game was a long one and along the way Warriors scored two crucial comeâ€"fromâ€"behind victories â€" a 65 semiâ€"final winover Windsor in two extra innings and an 11â€"10 win over Welland. Warriors opened the tournament with a 2â€"0 win over Leaside and they edged Etobicoke 3â€"2 in their third game. _ o _ §3 S *‘They showed a lot of character in the Welland game and the semiâ€"final game against Windsor," said Waterloo field manager Serge Hache. *A lot of people didn‘t think we‘d go that far. ‘"It was the first time in this tournament for a lot of guys and I think they performed extremely well for firstâ€"year midgets." A plan has been worked out to compensate teams for their added travel expenses, but Brill said he doesn‘t like the idea of travelling the added distance and feels the decision was forced on Midwestern clubs. The Midwestern loop will conâ€" sist of nine teams this season because there is also a new entry from Brantford. Teams will play a 48â€"game schedule. Other teams in the league are from Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Stratford, Listowel and Elmira. Welland fell short with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two out. Paleczny pitched a sevenâ€"hitter to shut out Leaside as Warriors played a good defensive game. Peter Godwin hit a runâ€"scoring triple in the second inning, then came home on a single by Jason Rose. Warriors scored one run on a fielder‘s choice and before Jason Rose hit a winning twoâ€"run single in the fifth. In the third game, both Etobicoke runs came in pitcher of the game and he took the loss. Julien Brandon started the game and Gord Scharf pitched the middle innings. Scharf doubled to start the seventh inning, but he was stranded. Mike Ruppe, Don Oberle and Rich Adair all had singles for Waterloo.
