Mason Ruffner With Stevie Ray Vaughan currently out of the spotlight, it may be Mason Ruffner‘s turn to assume the role of newest guitar hero. Gypsy Blood is his second album, the followup to his impressive but sadlyâ€"ignored debut. in The City Of Light another promising young band. The band has matured to the point where it appears to have reached an impasse. From a commercial standpoint, releasing a live album at this juncture isn‘t risky considering their popularity. But from an artistic angle, it may suggest a dearth of new ideas, a possibility Being the arena rock stars they now are, it seems like ages since Simple Minds were just despite a concentration on this more recent material. The grand gestures in the studio sound less affected on stage and for all its pretensions, the band proves it can really rock given the right setting. The sound is bright â€" material is given a much needed facelift. Which makes In The City Of Light a rare live album that isn‘t exclusively for fans. Ruffner has a lot going for him this time anyways. Whatever, Newman‘s point is well taken. His comment refers to musicians who take chances and if that‘s the criterion for what determines an artist, then Prince fits the bill. His stinging, inventive leads are derivative of Duane Allman and Lonnie Mack but he has a particularly outstanding and are definitive showcases for his playing. The album fails when producer Dave Edmunds adds strings. Such decoration is definitely out of place and someone with Edmunds‘ affinity for rock and roll should have known better. If he learns to forgo the garnish, Ruffner could be an original. Randy Newman is right.
