Waterloo defeated a strong Stratford team 4â€"2 in its opening game Friday night. Dina Townsend‘s single drove in the winning run in the 6th inning. Jenny Riediger struck out 14 Stratford batters and scored two runs herself to lead the Waterloo team. The Waterloo Novice Girls Allâ€"Star Team went undefeated to win the gold medal at a tournament in Stratford June 5â€"7. The Novice division is for ages 13â€"14. On Saturday, Waterloo defeated Kitchener 7â€"1 and Cambridge 12â€"1. Jenny Riediger and Mona Radmore were both three for four against Kitchener, and Riediger struck out 13 for the victory. Helena Mandic scored three runs in the win against Cambridge. Allison Wagner led the team to a 17â€"3 win over Sarnia on Sunday with two Khomeruns. Kim Koch and Janine Rigby also scored three runs each to help with the victory. In the championship game, Waterloo faced Cawthra (Toronto), who had previously gone undefeated against Oshawa, Chingacousy, Brampton and Burlington. Kim Koch led off the first inning with a double and scored on Jenny Riediger‘s single to open up a 1â€"0 lead which held up until the top of the seventh inning. Cawthra scored two runs in the seventh and appeared to have the game won. Townsend opened with a single in the bottom of the seventh but then was thrown out while attempting to reach second on a passed ball. Koch followed with a single and then advanced to second on an inâ€"field out. With two out and a 3 and 2 count on her, Allison Wagner hit her third home run of the day to give Waterloo a dramatic 3â€"2 victory. . . Novices take gold Waterioo and Bluevale collegiates recently named their top male and female athietes and all are in their graduating year. Gavin Siethaug and Val Simpson (above) were the best of the Bluevale Knights while Mike Hoehn and Val Smith led the WCI Vikings. Siethaug played volleybail, basketball and track and field while Simpson played in four sports â€" volleyball, soccer, badminton and basketball. Smith was in track and field and was an allâ€"Ontario winner in gymnastics. Hoehn was a first team allâ€"star as a football linesman and an allâ€"Ontario gold medallist in swimming.
