"Just as you go around that corner you almost have to backpedal," said McKillop. "It ruins your rhythm as you run." But weather conditions were the same for everyone, win or lose, and McKillop and Lingard established themselves as two athletes to watch in future years. Both are Grade 9 students and both ran in public school meet last year, Lingard for Lincolin Heights, and McKillop for Centennial. The head coach of the Kâ€"W Track Club wanted the to use the soil to build a berm to shield as much of the area as possible from high winds in similar Waterloo collegiate Vikings‘ Sean McKillop and Bluevale Knights‘ Val Lingard were two young runners who prevailed in the wind in their first CWOSSA meet. McKillop had broken one midget record and tied another in the Waterloo County meet on the same track the previous week, but on Thursday his times of 12.2 seconds in the 100 metres and 24.4 in the 200 were far from his best. Lingard actually knocked a couple seconds off her time from a week ago in finishing third in the 400 in 1: 00.4. She won the 200 in a slower time of 27.8 and placed second in the midget long jump, spanning 5.05 metres. Lingard and McKillop were especially aware of the wind at the curve on the north end of the track. ‘"‘When you come around that curve it slows you down really fast," said Lingard. â€" Richard O‘Brien 3 Chronicle Staff If Brent McFarlane had had his way concerning the soil excavated in construction of the new twin ice rinks near Centennial Stadium, some young runners might never have been introduced to the “joy:†of running in high winds on the stadium‘s track. fashion to what has been done at a sports complex a factor for high school athletes competing in the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Associâ€" ation‘s meet Thursday at the stadium.
