§ 210 King St. N. Waterioo 1 l EP es Pï¬ se mm mm t Enter pessimist manager Marty Freed (the wonderfully dour Jack Weston) as Rogers and Clark glibly perform all their ‘original hits‘ including Telling the Truth Can Be A Dangerous Business, How Big Am I, and the critically lambasted Wardrobe of Love. Freed gives his act some wellâ€"worn advice. ‘‘Sing songs people already know." In standard Two for the Road fashion, Rogers and Clark unwittingly find themselves embroiled with mysterious woman mercenary Shirra Azell (Isabelle Adjanzi whose whole performance is literally shrouded), a mysterious treasure map, and mysterious CIA mainman Jim Harrison, played by Charles ‘"The Lonely Guy" Grodin. Songwriters Lyle Rogers and Chuck "The Hawk" Clark resemble baaaaadd outtakes from Rob Reiner‘s cyptic gem, This Is Spinal Tap (a mustâ€"see movie for anyone remotely connected with the music industry). Rogers and Clark‘s incessantly rhyming lyrics assault ears, leaving the audience to pick its collective jaw off the floor usually after the first line. These guys don‘t even rate the Gong Show. May cast Hoffman and Beatty in wry role reversal, creating Ishtar‘s prime appeal. Hoffman plays pianoâ€"bar hasâ€"been (butâ€"neverâ€"was) fedoraâ€"hat clad ladies‘ man Chuck ‘"The Hawk" Clark. Beatty is bashful bumbling sidekick, former iceâ€"cream vendor, manicâ€"depressive Lyle Rogers. Both separately dream of a hallowed store display window niche alongside, the recording world‘s Rich and Famous. ‘"‘The only reason we aren‘t famous is because Simon & Garfunkel had an agent," rationalizes Clark. Ishtar or How To Succeed In Songâ€"Writing Without Even Trying draws an intriguing parallel between Rogers and Clark, and Simon & Garfunkel. True, Ishtar‘s plot construction is at times mundane, but May has given token ‘80s movie fans vintage gold. Ishtar is a dose of the old Bing Crosby/Bob Hope ‘50‘s formula flicks, seasoned with loveable Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis antics and a pinch of priceless Danny Kaye for good measure. Wrapped in this failproof ‘50s device, May injects ‘80s cynicism, making mockery of current Middle East/ American relations, the CIA, the KGB, her delicious insight dry as the Ishtar desert. Dustin Hoffman (Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Tootsie) and Warren Beatty (Reds, Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait) are unlikely as May‘s foils, particularly Beatty who is not really regarded as this type of comic hero. Ishtar serves as an acting oasis, both Hoffman and Beatty sideâ€"splitting as The World‘s Worst Songwriting Team! * Chronicle Special You should not judge a book by its cover. And you should never judge a movie by its ad campaign. Critics have christened Ishtar, the new Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, Elaine May comic epic, a 40â€"million dollar box office disaster, adhering to the silver screen policy, the more hype, the bigger the bomb. Director Elaine May has written Ishtar with sharp tongueâ€"inâ€"check flair and daring hilarity, while cleverly using every comedic personally in the book from sublime to slapstick. In Ishtar, Hoffman and Beatty pass the audition. But Ole Blue Eyes had got nothing to worry about.
