Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff _ They had a good run for their money, but the combined team of track and field athletes from St. Jerome‘s and St. Mary‘s high schools won the Wateriloo County high school track and field championship for the third year in a row. Knights also showed that they have some upâ€"andâ€"coming stars. Jeremy Hall‘s javelin toss of 51.32 metres in midget competition broke a record set by former Knight Stefan Zinke. McKillop ran in just two events and won them both. He tied the record of 23.8 in the 200 and won the 100 in 11.3 to break the old record of 11.4. He was even faster in the 100 heats and WCI coaches will inquire as to whether his time of 11.2 was official for recordâ€"setting Bennett won the 80 hurdies in 12.8 and took the 100 in 13.1. She ran the 200 in 27.7 to finish second behind Lingard. Val Lingard lost out to Southwood‘s triple winner Jen Dempsey in the individual winners department but she had two firsts and one second place finish. She won the 200 in 27.7, placed second in the 400 in 1: 02.5 and won the long jump with a distance of 4.92 metres. WCI Vikings also showed they have some rising young stars in Sean McKillop and Jill Bennett. Knights also won the 4 x 400 open relay with Kueneman, McCormick, Lingard and Tina Menyes. Gloria Kiefer of the senior Knights won the 100 in 12.7 and placed second in both the 200 and long jump, which was won by Vikings‘ Val Smith, who spanned 5.29 metres. Patti Lutz of WCI won the javelin event with a toss of 32.36 and BCI‘s Sherri Faulds was second in the senior shot put. Vikings‘ Paula Schwan won the junior girls 3,000 in 10:47.2. She placed second in the 1,500 and third in the 800. Bluevale‘s Stephanie Laurence was second in both the 100 and 200 sprints and Shannon Archer placed second in discus. ~ Janice Awad was another double winner for Vikings in two junior girls field events.
