I_. i wl t Seven years after its founding, the organization, which exists to coâ€"ordinate local arts events and provide a resource centre for artists of all kinds, is finally being recognized as the voice of the local artistic community and turned to for input and advice by the general public and governing bodies, said arts council chairman Marie Le Lievre. ‘‘We turned a corner about a year ago...we‘ve made a breakthrough in credibility. People are now coming to us for advice and input. The key has been money. With added funding from the Ontario Arts Council, a grant from the region of Waterloo, approved two years ago, and a grant from the City of Waterloo which was OK‘d for the first time this year, the arts council now has the dollars it needs to run the programs it wants. Kitchener Alligator Records chief Bruce Iglauer is doing more than his share of promoting the old and the new in American blues. From a modest beginning, Iglauer has built an imâ€" pressive catalogue of blues artists whose music spans many years, styles and cities. Little Charlie and The Nightcats are typical of the new breed. Like Lil‘ ED and The Blues All The Way Crazy Little Charlie and The Nightcats Iglauer likes to champion, Charlie Baty and his band have paid their dues playing the bar circuit. The years of honing their skills in the San Francisco Bay area show. Baty is a remarkâ€" able guitarist who shifts easily through jump blues, swing and rockabilly. The Nightcats are Dancing On The Edge wreckless abandon, especially Rick Estrin whose brilliant harmonica and sense of humor jockey for attention with Baty‘s guitar. Together they are one of the most exciting bands to come along and producer Iglauer does a fine job of simulating the live setting in the studio. No blues lover should be without All The Way Crazy. * Iglauer sure brings out the best in his employees. Take Roy Buchanan, for example. Long considered one of the most influential guitarists, his style has been adopted by numerous guitar heroes, notably Jeff Beck. But while Buchanan is acknowledged for his technical skills, it‘s these same skills that have been his undoing on record. You know, the same old story. Hands of a surgeon, passion of a telephone operator. Now, it also supports a Roger‘s Cable television program entitled Arts on View, holds the Beaux Arts costume ball to raise money, organizes workshops on everything from fundâ€"raising and communication to marketing and running a small arts business, and sponsors a juried art show. conducting an ‘"‘aggressive" membership drive during the month of March. *‘One of the main difficulties we have is that a lot of people who are interested in cultural things don‘t know of our existenceâ€"we want to change that," said Robert Meyers, arts council vice chairman. ‘‘*We‘re selling the memberships as support of the arts community," added council coâ€"ordinator Ruth Russell. ‘‘The more money we have the more work we can do...the more extensive our support of the arts community will be." highâ€"volumes â€" is still intact. But this is his first album that doesn‘t have a clinical feel. Substance wins out over from, especially the blazing cover versions of "Peter Gunn‘" and *"You Can‘t Judge A Book By The Cover." The latter and two other cuts include strong vocal performances from Delbert McClinton. Dancing On The Edge reveals Buchanan to have more of an imagination than one might have thought. And after so many years on the treadmill, it‘s nice to see him taking a step in the right direction. Columbia Records 1958â€"1986 Johnny Cash was one of the Sun Records principals who played a major role n shaping rock and roll. Because Cash recorded much of his best work for Sun, the Columbia years isn‘t a definitive package. It is however, a good approximation of what Cash was, and is, all here, including ‘‘*Folsom Prison Blues", "Ring of Fire", and ‘"Orange Blossom Special." And of course what would any Cash collection be without "A Boy Named Sue." An anomaly when compared to Cash‘s more important work, it remains the one song most people identify with the man. The songs are in chronological order, and it‘s interesting to note the artistical changes that have taken place over the years. From the seminal ‘"Oh What A Dream" â€" Cash‘s first song for Columbia â€" Cash later experiâ€" mented with horns and strings and more recently worked with rockabilly revivalists Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds.
