PAGE 18 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1987 Some bridge plays carry exotic names. Here is an illustration of the ‘‘Coup de Diable" (Devil‘s Coup) brilliantly executed by the Czech player Dr. Josef Kubista during a three way match between Poland, Italy and Czechoslovakia at the International Championship in Marienbad. Czechoslovakia beat Italy and tied Poland to capture the championship. The hand was subsequently played in the Closed Room, shown on a Vuâ€"graph and analyzed by an expert commentator. When Kubista, sitting South, ended up in a 4 spade contract, the commentator announced: "The Czech team appears to be heading to a 700 point loss unless a lighting strikes and West doesn‘t play his heart A, K, Q. Eastâ€"West should obviously score three heart tricks and declarer cannot avoid losing one spade." West cashed his three heart tricks and switched to diamonds. Kubista executed his Devil‘s Coup. He made the remaining 10 tricks without any help from Eastâ€"West, thus scoring 620. After netting the results the Czech team did not lose 700 points but gained 20. Next week we will show you how this was done. Both vulnerable. Dealer: South Bidding: Closed Room In the Open Room Poland playing Northâ€"South bid and made 3 noâ€"trump. After three rounds of hearts West switched to diamonds. Dummy took the diamond Ace, played the King of spades and ducked one spade, protecting the contract against a 4â€"1 split in spades. The fourth spade was now established and declarer made his nine tricks scoring 600 for Poland.
