Melodoe Martin‘uk Chronicle Staff When Julie Reinhardt decided to open a flower shop in the University Shops Plaza 11, near the University of Waterloo, friends and business advisors all warned her she was making a mistake. The students are going to be trouble; they're destructive; students aren't interested in buying flowers or plants, she heard over and over again. A A - Well, Reinhardt went with her instincts, opened Julie's Flowers and Gifts in the plaza at 17FUniversity Ave. W., and not once has she regretted her decision. Rather than being trouble, the students and staff from the universities are her best customers. "Seventy-five per cent of my business is from the university. A lot of students spend a lot of money on plants and flowers. They're great--they'll buy a plant for Mom, for doing the laundry. Or a tlower for a girlfriend, they're in love. Without the students I'd be having a hard time," said Reinhardt. Providing quality living and silk plants and giftware at affordable prices with first-class service is the focus of Julie's Flowers and Gifts. Reinhardt is committed to keeping her customers satisfied, even if it means going out early on a Sunday morning to do last-minute floral arrangements for a wedding. "I do everything here myself, and I think that makes a difference. 1 choose the stock myself, clean it, prepare it myself . It's more personal that way, and I think people like to dearwith the ownerff "It seems like I've been in this business all my life. I always thought that someday, if I could find the right location, I'd try running my own shop. Last year I decided the time waturight." "I want people to come to me with confidence, time after time--l want to be their personal florist. 1'll match dresses, carpet or wallpaper, or eustom-design a plant or arrangement to suit specific needs," said Reinhardt. Opening her own shop was an inevitable step for Reinhardt, who started working in the floral business when she was a high school student. She's a graduate of noral design courses and has managed floral shops for others for years. "We opened in January and the past few months have been the busiest in my life. We're busy all the time. The week goes by so fast I can't believe it when its over, and I love it. It feels great, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. If the first four months are any indication of what the future will be like for Julie's Flowers, Julie Reinhardt is going to be one busy store owner. Seventy-hour work weeks are the norm now, and there's no sign that business will be slowing. Students help Juliie's Flowers bloom all over 't.trthirittotaaw.Fto-tettgttt.. IO--- NAM m.
