In honor of her dedication and contributions, trustees of the Waterioo county board of education last Thursday unanimously voted to name the new Beechwood west school after Johnston, who is retiring this summer after 37 years as a teacher and principal in Waterioo. â€" â€" *‘She‘s one of the most remarkable, most highlyâ€" respected teachers in the system," said Waterloo trustee John Hendry, who asked the board to select Mary Johnston public school over the four other names recommended by an ad hoc board committee. ‘‘She‘s just an incredible person. ". * The Mary Johnston public school was selected from the more than 400 entries sent in by the public. For coming up with the winning name, contest winner Shirley Parker, of 109 Edgehill Dr., Kitchener will have her name engraved on a school plaque. The $2.8â€"million school, located at Fischerâ€"Hallman Road and Keats Way, is to open in September. Johnston has spent her entire career in Waterloo schools. In 1950 she began her career at in Waterioo Township school No. 2, and later taught at MacGregor public school. She served as vic principal of Empire and Centennial public schools, and principal at Brighton, Winston Churchill, Keatsway and now LOTS OF FREE PARKING AT OUR FRONT DOOR onnston Other entries in the name the school contest ranged from the unusual, Birdy 2 or Waterbuffalo elementary school, to the humorous, Beechwood No Name school. Entrants also proposed naming the school after heroes, such as Terry Fox, Carl Hiebert and Anna Kaljas, and politicians, Prime Minister Brian Mulronâ€" ey and Waterloo Mayor Marjorie Carroll. The four other finalists in the name contest were: Beechwood public school; Beechwood West public school; Abraâ€" ham Erb public school and W.T. Townshend public MacGregor public school. In 1977 Johnston was selected as the outstanding educator in the province, from among 30,000 members of the Federation of Women Teachers‘® Association of Ontario.
