Recruiting â€"â€"â€"~» because of a knee operation. Rick Beedie, a pitcher with Mount Hope last season, has also signed with CHYM‘rs to replace Bill Miller, who decided not to take cortisone shots for a back injury. Also gone from CHYM‘rs lineup are Brian Schott, Brian Hepburn and Ken Brooks, all retired. They‘ll miss the baserunning that Brooks gave them, especially if third baseman Darrell Edâ€" wards, another fast runner, doesn‘t return. WCI Vikings‘ gymnastics team enjoyed another great season. Musselman wasn‘t sure if Edwards would be back with CHYM‘rs this season. ‘‘We‘re not fleet of foot," said Musselman. ‘We‘re average at best and we‘re not going to count on someone who‘s not here. We‘ll consider it a bonus if Edwards comes."‘ Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff First comes the interview, After that, you think of what you should have said. Such was the case for Waterloo collegiate Vikings‘ gymnast Val Smith, winner of two gold medals in what might have been her final competition, the Ontario high school meet April 10â€"11 in Scarborough. She won on the balance beam with a score of 9.25 and followed that with a win on the uneven bars (9.40) and a third place finish on vault (9.15) after her second event, floor exercise, was cut short when she twisted her knee. She scored 7.90 although she completed just 30 seconds of a routine that could last a minuteâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half. After that, she was interviewed by a Toornto daily. Later, she thought of something coach Kaarina Tulisalo said years ago when she was in Grade 9. "K.T. said, ‘You can only strive to be the best that you can be,"" said Smith. ‘*You can‘t worry about anyone else.‘ I think that applies to me in school, gymnastics and everything." Smith twisted her knee coming down from a full twist that she‘d done more successfully at the Waterloo County meet. She‘s a Grade 13 student and i her second of three terms she had a 91.8 average. She hopes to go on to systems design at University of Waterloo where there is no gymnastics program. ‘"I guess I could compete independently but I don‘t think so," said Smith. "I don‘t like to take things for granted. I like to say ‘I hope,‘ or ‘God willing.‘ ‘"I haven‘t decided whether to go into judging but I hope to keep on coaching. I enjoyed coaching the juniors on the team this year. I was so happy for them." Their exhibition season continues Thursday, May 7 when they play host to Owen Sound at 7: 30. "(Floor) was my second event," said Smith. ‘"‘There was beam first and I was glad to get it over. I was a bit shaky. "I did my best vault and best bars routine." Juniors such as Penny McDonald and twin sisters Hannah and Vivian Woodley received some coaching from the senior Vikings and all three were medallists at the allâ€"Ontario meet. "It doesn‘t seem surprising because her goal was to win allâ€"Ontario and she did. Nevertheless, we have to remember how big of an accomplishment that is." In Club ‘A,‘ Vikings‘ Robyn Jalbert was overall winner with first place finishes on bars and vault and Smith admired the season she had. 19° CLIP THIS AD AND SAVE!
