tettetltion begins Safaris): Precision skating teams are judged on the quality of execu- tion of group manoevers and original moves similar to synchronised swimming. Artistic impression and technical ability are also aspects considered by KWSC hosted a send-off party for [tween and Diamonds Sunday nigttt at Rittkait-'Ne-Pagt and the Krystal: skated an "tttttttim Maekowski's teams train at Rink In The Park in Waterloo and use video cameras to help learn and perfect their routines. This past weekend, K-W teams were entered in the Canadian International competition Satur- day ln London and the Kweens continued their winning streak by taking a gold medal while the Diamonds took a third place bronze medal. The pre-noviee K-W Gems placed seventh and the K-W Gems ended up sixth in a division for adults. Precision skating began south of the border in Michigan and when it spread to Canada it came first to Western Ontario. But Mackowski says the rest of Canada is catching up and she expects strong competition in Laval. Precision skaters, Mackowski said, all have one thing in common that brings them into this team sport. They have more time than highly competitive athletes who train extensively for individual, pairs or dance competition. Time is important because the committment to precision skat- ing goes beyond the practices and competition. Skaters need to make a time committment for fundraising purposes to support their teams. A success story from the K-W Skating Club continues today " two precision teams - K-W Kweens and Diamonds on lee - leave for Laval, Que., to compete in the Canadian championships. It marks the second time that coach Kathy Mackowski has taken two teams to the Canadian championships. The same teams competed nationally in Ilderton in 1984. It's the second trip to the Canadian championships for the novice Diamonds while the sen- ior Kweens have been there each year since the competition start- ed five years ago. Both teams qualified for the national championships by skat- ing to victories at the Western Ontario Section championships in Simcoe Feb. 21-22. Precision skaters line up for title Iii Laval.
